Fresh off his stunning come-from-behind win over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC Fight Night 28, Dan Henderson says he wants a UFC title strapped around his waist before he rides off into the sunset.
Henderson made the comments to Heidi Androl on the UFC on Fox post-fight show.
That’s the last goal of mine and the last thing I need to achieve in this sport is getting that UFC title. I’ve had other titles, but that UFC belt still eludes me. I’m still after it and I feel like I’m still capable of doing that. There’s so many guys at light heavyweight now and half the fans are asking me to go down to middleweight, so I’m really open to anything.
Henderson may have a long way to go. He’s currently ranked No. 6 after his win over Rua, but the win was his first in his last four fights. He was also being soundly beaten by Rua before dropping the Brazilian with a stunning right hook that rearranged Rua‘s nose and led to the finish of the fight. He’ll likely need a few more wins over top contenders before he can earn a title shot.
Henderson is no stranger to championships. He won the UFC 17 Middleweight Tournament and was the only fighter to hold two concurrent titles in separate weight classes; Henderson was the PRIDE welterweight and middleweight champion.
The fight against Rua was the first on Henderson’s new six-fight UFC contract. It’s a deal Henderson says he wants to complete before he retires. At 43 years old, time may not be on his side. But as he did against Rua, Henderson can surprise us from time to time.
