The UFC’s doors will always be open to Brock Lesnar.
While fielding questions from the media at the pre-fight press conference for UFC on FUEL 5, UFC President Dana White was asked whether or not he would bring Lesnar back, if given the opportunity.
“Fighters Only” was on the scene.
“Sure, I’d bring Brock back. If Brock wanted to fight in the UFC, I’d do it,” said White.
Lesnar officially retired from MMA after losing to Alistair Overeem in December 2011. He has since returned to his old stomping grounds at World Wrestling Entertainment.
Recently, there have been rumblings of Lesnar growing unhappy with professional wrestling and possibly looking to return to fighting. Most of these rumors were brought about due to the extensive hiatus he has been on in the WWE.
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, the WWE has been waiting to decide on Lesnar‘s future based off of pay-per-view numbers from “Summerslam 2012,” which aired on August 19.
With Lesnar headlining, the event did its best numbers since 2008, and the WWE will likely offer Lesnar another contract in 2013.
What does this mean for Lesnar‘s MMA future?
Lesnar‘s manager and close friend Paul Heyman answered this question best in his interview with MMAJunkie a few weeks ago.
I think Dana White would love to have Brock Lesnar back. I think Lorenzo Fertitta would love to have Brock Lesnar back. Does Brock Lesnar want to go back? I don’t think Brock has anything to prove in the UFC anymore. He’s 35 years old. He made a lot of money in the UFC.
Lesnar is a former UFC heavyweight champion. It doesn’t get any better than that in the world of MMA. After undergoing a pair of serious surgeries for an intestinal disorder, it would be a major risk for Lesnar to return to fighting.
The risks outweigh the rewards.
With that said, Lesnar is a true athlete, and he thrives off legitimate competition. This is a quality in human beings that is incredibly hard to shake. There is the possibility that Lesnar grows tired of gimmicks and entertainment and eventually seeks an MMA return.
One thing is certain wherever Lesnar ends up.
People will be watching.
