After having suffered her first professional loss in her mixed martial arts (MMA) career just under a year ago, former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is making her long-awaited return to the Octagon.
Some controversy surrounds her return to action, however, as some fans are questioning UFC President Dana White’s decision to get an immediate title shot in her return match. Rousey will meet current 135-pound champ Amanda Nunes for the title in the main event of UFC 207 in December.
During a recent interview with FOX Sports, White defended his decision to give Rousey an immediate title opportunity, shutting down critics in the process:
“It’s one of those things you can never win with people anyway,” White said. “So she doesn’t deserve to fight for the title but if we brought her back against somebody else — ‘oh they’re trying to give her an easy win, they’re trying to build her!’ and this and that.
“If you start listening to Twitter and people on Twitter, good luck to you.”
White remains adamant that he and the UFC always match-up the best fighters with one another on a regular basis, and assures fans that although she has suffered her first loss of her career, Rousey is still one of the baddest women on the planet.
“When do we not put the best against the best? That’s what we do,” White said.
“Ronda lost one fight but Ronda is still one of the best fighters on Earth. So she will fight one of the other best fighters on Earth.”
Nunes and Rousey will meet in the main event of UFC 207 for the women’s bantamweight championship live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the T-Mobile Arena on December 30, 2016.
