Strikeforce heavyweight kingpin Daniel Cormier will cap off his career with the promotion that made him famous this January 12. Then it’s off to the UFC to play with the big boys.
Far from being intimidated by the impending move, Cormier is already looking forward to matching up with some of the best the UFC has to offer. Namely, he wants to have a go at perennial contender Frank Mir.
Cormier recently spoke to Fight Hub TV about his UFC intentions.
“When I come in [to the UFC], I am going to stay at heavyweight and I really want to fight Frank Mir,” he explained. “That is the fight I want.”
Cormier and Mir were originally slated for a Strikeforce showdown last year, but the bout was scrapped when Mir suffered an injury while training.
The Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix winner communicated his hopes that that a match with Mir could be rescheduled to go down in San Jose, where he trains at American Kickboxing Academy.
I would love for it to be on the FOX show here in San Jose. April 20th, fight Frank Mir, on FOX, have it be a free broadcast and that will help expose me and get more fans behind me who may not know me. That is what I want right now. That is the fight I have trained for, and would be excited to train for it again; Mir wants the fight, I think it would be a great fight. It’s like we are doing Joe Silva’s job for him.
Of course, first things first. Before Cormier can look ahead to April 20, he’ll have to get past Dion Staring later this month. But the 33-year-old clearly has his sights set high with a name like Mir.
What say you? Is Cormier vs. Mir a heavyweight tussle you’re interested in seeing? Leave it in the comments.
