If you ask some fighters why they continue to compete, they will try to create a special answer.

Not Demetrious Johnson.

The reigning UFC flyweight champion pushes towards becoming the best so that he can cash big checks at the end of the day.

“For the paycheck,” Johnson said on UFC Tonight Wednesday. “If you don’t take the fighter seriously, you didn’t take the paycheck seriously. You lose someone and then the zeros on the back of the paycheck go down.”

Johnson was forced to miss out on one of those paychecks earlier this year when a knee injury knocked him off UFC 201 and a title defense vs. Wilson Reis. He is now set to face the winner of The Ultimate Fighter in December.

“The knee is one of those things, you’ve got to let it heal,” Johnson said. “I’ll be back training on September 13 and ready to fight in December. This is the first time I got to enjoy summer vacation in four years.”
