Anthony Johnson has currently been booked for his next fight against Jake Rosholt, and it has gotten my brain generating a return scheme for the powerful MMA fighter.
For most, you probably remember Johnson from his weight-missing days in the UFC in two different weight classes. Johnson, who spent time in welterweight and briefly at middleweight, is now a light heavyweight looking to re-establish himself.
He made a successful debut recently, knocking out Esteves Jones in just over two rounds. Johnson’s power has obviously transferred from 170 to 185, making him an instant threat.
Rosholt is a tough opponent, especially for a guy that has trouble against wrestlers, traditionally. So, if Johnson is victorious in this fight, should the UFC give him another chance.
Yes, he has a history of missing weight. But, fighting at 205 pounds, 35 pounds above his old weight class of welterweight, gives him a significantly better chance of consistently making weight.
Since his cut from the UFC, he is 2-0. Yes, he missed weight in the first fight, but that was before his move to light heavyweight. He easily beat UFC veteran Dave Branch, which deserves some attention.
He is an exciting striker with sickening power. Many fans are attracted to fighters who can end a fight in one strike. Johnson is one of those guys and still has a number of fans from his UFC days.
Like I said, if he can beat a top-level wrestler like Rosholt, who is a UFC veteran, I think he deserves another chance in the UFC. With a thick muscle set but a new weight class, Johnson has found himself a new home.
Hopefully, he can win his fight and earn his way back into the world’s largest MMA promotion.
