UFC Bantamweight champion Dominic Cruz suffered a serious knee injury on Monday, believed to be a torn ACL.
The devastating news was confirmed by UFC President Dana White on Twitter, who tweeted:
“It’s true Cruz blew his ACL. Stay tuned for more info.”
The injury is a crushing blow to a UFC 148 super card that was to be headlined by a battle of Ultimate Fighter coaches Cruz and Uriah Faber, in addition to the highly anticipated middleweight rematch between Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva.
Cruz’s injury should also adversely affect the highly touted debut season of The Ultimate Fighter Live on FX, which has already been one of the lowest-rated seasons in series history.
Cruz’s most likely replacement for what is expected to be an interim championship bout is Michael McDonald, who stopped Miguel Torres via knockout last month at UFC 145.
