Very few, if any, 47-year-olds have an imagination quite as vivid as Don Frye.
There is never a dull moment whenever Frye speaks into a microphone. Even the most astute reporter can’t prepare themselves for an interview with the MMA legend, who is admittedly four months sober.
MMA reporter Karyn Bryant has endured just about every awkward situation possible. She survived a motorboat from Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, chased around an agitated Nick Diaz and withstood some fairly uncomfortable sexual humor from Josh Barnett.
But even all of that couldn’t prepare her for an interview with Frye, who sat merely a few feet across from former UFC fighter and top Bellator heavyweight contender Cheick Kongo:
I think [current fighters] are a bunch of sissies. I think they should be wearing purses and have them paint their damn toenails, what the hell is that all about? They should be putting on makeup and lipstick and prancing around in high heels. They probably do it half the time anyways when they’re training.
Kongo bursts out laughing immediately after Frye’s comments to disguise an obviously uncomfortable situation.
When asked to respond, Kongo agreed that Frye has a point, but he also deferred to the fact that sometimes a fighter needs to be smart to ensure a longer career and a sustained source of income.
Frye quickly excluded Kongo from his rant, but he didn’t show the same love for former UFC light heavyweight champions Rampage and Tito Ortiz. The two MMA legends were expected to headline Bellator 106 on pay-per-view, but the bout was scrapped a little over a week ago when Ortiz injured his neck in practice.
With the main event gone, Bellator decided to downgrade the event from pay-per-view back to its normal free slot on Spike TV.
Frye compared Rampage vs. Ortiz to a fictitious bout between mermaids and unicorns:
Why don’t we just figure who’s gonna fight between a mermaid and a unicorn? If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen. Don’t worry about it.

As for MMA, Bellator probably would have been better off going with the mermaid and the unicorn.
