With nine days to go until UFC 205, the stars of the New York show have been putting in their media rounds. In what will be a historic night as the first UFC show in the Big Apple, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor will attempt to etch his name in the record books. Taking on lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez for the 155-pound strap, the Irishman could become the first ever to hold simultaneous championships. After going 1-1 against Nate Diaz at welterweight, many expected it was back to the 145-pound category for ‘The Notorious.’

Clearly wanting the biggest fight possible for the main event at UFC 205, the promotion allowed McGregor to keep the featherweight belt. This decision rubbed a lot of fighters the wrong way, perhaps none more so than interim featherweight boss Jose Aldo. Until facing the outspoken Irish striker at UFC 194, ‘Scarface’ was undefeated in the UFC. 13 seconds and one punch later, Aldo lay flat-out, relinquishing the belt to his sworn enemy. ‘Junior’ would later go on to demand a release from his contract when he was denied a unification rematch with McGregor. It’s safe to say that Alvarez vs. McGregor is both an incredible and controversial pairing.

Donald Cerrone Understands This Fight

Speaking with Kenny Florian and Michael Bisping last night, top 10-ranked lightweight/welterweight Donald Cerrone says he has no hard feelings. Although he beat ‘The Silent Assassin’ at UFC 178, ‘Cowboy’ says he understands why McGregor is getting the shot. Here’s what Cerrone told ‘UFC Tonight.’

“Yeah, there’s probably a little bit of jealousy. Haha, a bit of inner jealousy, yeah you know, red panty night. Hey, he puts asses in the seats. Every time I bet against the guy he goes out there and wins, so I’m probably going to start betting for the guy. If I was Eddie I would go out there and try and wrestle, expose his ground game. Like I said though, I keep betting against the guy and he keeps proving me wrong. I’m gonna say Conor wins it, why not? I’m gonna jump the bandwagon. I understand why Conor got the main event, he seats more seats than me. The boss probably looks at me and says ‘You are more of a first fight of the night kinda guy.’”
