To the very end of the UFC 205 promotional period, Conor McGregor and Eddie Alvarez took every possible opportunity to get under the other’s skin. The weigh-ins closed with a staredown between the UFC featherweight champion and the UFC lightweight champion and, surprisingly, nothing especially interesting happened between the two.
Something interesting that did happen, however, is Alvarez repeatedly shushing the crowd. Check out the video below of Alvarez hitting the scale (at the 43:15 mark, to be exact and warning, NSFW language in all videos and links below):
He did so again before he spoke with Joe Rogan following the staredown. Check it (and the crowd’s reaction) here:
This puts a cap on a heated build toward the biggest event of the season, which has seen the two headliners snipe back and forth over everything from fighting styles to money to their significant others.
Despite Alvarez getting into it with the crowd a bit, this was a surprisingly dull staredown by “McGregor Fight” standards, which have chaos as the norm. At UFC 194, there was an interesting back-and-forth between himself and then-champion Jose Aldo, and both of his weigh-ins with Nate Diaz were pull-apart affairs.
Of course, the pre-fight silliness and pandering to the crowd goes out the window on Saturday night at UFC 205. McGregor and Alvarez will step into the cage for possibly the single biggest fight in MMA history, and no insults and no fake chair-swinging will make a difference.
