Rising UFC welterweight contender Leon Edwards made the most out of his main event spot earlier today (Sat., June 23, 2018) at UFC Fight Night 132 live on Fight Pass from inside Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore, when he defeated former UFC title challenger Donald Cerrone via unanimous decision.
It wasn’t the cleanest of wins, especially considering “Cowboy” battled back late to make it a one-round fight, but Edwards looked good throughout. He bloodied Cerrone, led most exchanges, did the most damage, and proved that he’s able to go five hard rounds with a world-class fighter.
Following his victory over “Cowboy,” Edwards wasted little time calling out his next opponent at 170 pounds.
“Who said I can’t go five rounds? I go five rounds easy,” Edwards said during his post-fight interview. “Sean Shelby, UFC Bimingham, me and Jorge Masvidal. Let’s go. Make it happen”
Having won his last six Octagon appearances, it makes sense for the promotion to push Edwards further up the welterweight ladder and give him a hard-nosed contender like Masvidal. While Masvidal hasn’t fought since his decision loss to Stephen Thompson back at UFC 217, he remains one of the toughest outs in the division.
“Not really,” said Edwards when asked if there’s a reason he called out Masvidal following his victory over Cerrone. “He’s the same kind of style as ‘Cowboy.’ I like to take out these old guns and keep chipping away. I want to push for that UFC Birmingham card.”
Whether or not UFC is able to grant Edwards his wish of fighting in England later this year, the next step for “Rocky” is going to be a big one. The 26-year-old has joined fellow welterweight Darren Till as two of the most promising English contenders in the sport. Edwards should have no problem locking down a highly-ranked opponent next time out.
