Just when you think that maybe, just maybe, you have heard the last of the talk about UFC superfights, someone pulls you back in to discuss them. Most recently that someone was UFC welterweight contender Jake Ellenberger, but his reasoning for suggesting the superfight may be a bit different than what you expect.
Ellenberger, fresh off a first-round knockout victory over Nate Marquardt at UFC 158, recently opened up on his feelings about the UFC’s welterweight kingpin and what options he thinks St-Pierre has regarding his career.
St-Pierre fought on the UFC 158 card with Ellenberger, headlining the event in a bout against Nick Diaz.
Despite the fact that St-Pierre’s normally unshakable demeanor appeared, well, shaken before the fight and the threats of “the worst beating ever” hung in the air, St-Pierre delivered what he has become known for: a masterful performance that negates the strengths of his opponents.
The fight may not have been exciting to some, and it definitely wasn’t the worst beating we have ever seen Diaz take, but it was a win for the champ—the eighth consecutive title defense of his career.
Therein lies the conundrum for the champ, as Ellenberger states: “He’s in a position he can only lose, it can only get worse. If I was him, I would look to fight Anderson Silva and then retire. You beat the top guys and eventually you lose, somebody’s going to beat you.” Ellenberger then goes on to reveal why he feels he could be the guy to beat St-Pierre if he eventually does fight for the title.
