Whoever thinks jiu-jitsu would be useless in any real-life scenario, look no further than a recent robbery attempt foiled foiled by a rear-naked choke.
Retired MMA fighter Tom “Mate” Anderton explains that one day at his business, Tom’s Music Trade in Red Lion, Pa., he noticed a shopper attempting to sneak out of the store with records in his back pocket.
That didn’t sit will with Anderton, who pulled the records out of the patron’s back pocket and confronted him about the alleged theft.
The potential robber then pulled a knife on Anderton, who quickly disarmed the man before locking up a rear-naked choke.
As he recounts, he at first tried to simply subdue the would-be robber, but after over a minute of holding more of a headlock than a choke, Anderton decided enough was a enough and quickly decided to apply the basic submission hold.
Looks like Anderton‘s training paid off, as he put the potential thief to sleep in a matter of seconds.
“He just went down for a moment, I’m not actually trying to choke him out,” Anderton says during the video. “But he’s still struggling … he’s still … in a second I just put my hand on the back of his head, apply a bit more pressure and he just goes limp. Ya know, that’s it, I just pretty much let him go then and he’s calm after that pretty much.”
Anderton also notes that his 12-year-old daughter was in the store when the incident occurred, so he is very thankful the situation played out the way it did.
Just goes to show, a little mixed martial arts training has the potential to go a long way.
