Former UFC light heavyweight champ Forrest Griffin (19-7) has suffered a bad knee injury and has been forced out of his upcoming UFC 155 bout with Phil ‘Mr. Wonderful’ Davis (10-1).
UFC president Dana White announced the news on Twitter (@danawhite) this afternoon.
– Forrest Has MCL tear and ACL strain. 20 cc’s of blood removed from his knee and the saga continues at the UFC!!
This injury follows on the heels of other fighters who have fallen to the injury bug including Gray Maynard and Chris Weidman.
UFC 155: Dos Santos vs. Velasquez II is expected to take place on December 29, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
No opponent or replacement bout has been named by the promotion at this time.
Griffin was originally a replacement for now No. 1 contender Chael Sonnen, having gone 1-1 in his last two and 3-1 in his last four. Griffin won a decision over Tito Ortiz in their trilogy bout this past July at UFC 148, while suffering a first round knockout loss to Mauricio Rua at UFC 134 in August 2011.
Davis is 1-1 (1NC) in his last three, having earned a solid win over Wagner Prado in their rematch at UFC 153. Davis used his wrestling to control the fight and landed an anaconda choke in the second round to end things. Both fighters had initially squared off at UFC on FOX 4 but an accidental eye-poke ended Prado’s night early ending in a “No Contest.”
