Despite posting a decent record at lightweight, winning UFC gold at 155 lbs and defeating names like BJ Penn, Gray Maynard and Sean Sherk, Frankie Edgar is moving down to featherweight.
According to a tweet by UFC Tonight’s Ariel Helwani, Edgar has decided to not only move down but would also like to fight in the division before the year is over with.
Many people have wanted Edgar to move down a division.
Despite winning the lightweight title and defending it three times, many still felt that Edgar was undersized at lightweight.
It’s no secret that Edgar would need to cut little to no weight to reach 155 and should have no issue dropping an extra 10 pounds.
With Edgar dropping to featherweight, it means a few important things for the division.
First and foremost, it could mean a possible new title contender for Jose Aldo.
Aldo has cleaned out most of the featherweight division and could possibly be looking to move up in weight. If Aldo can get past Erik Koch at UFC 153 and Edgar can win in his featherweight debut, the only thing left for him to do in the division will be to take on Edgar.
Besides getting a shot at Aldo, it also means new challenges for Edgar.
Thanks to being a former champion and a big name in the sport, Edgar has now become the No. 2 target in the featherweight division. A win over Edgar would instantly shoot someone up in the division.
If Edgar can be a success in the featherweight division though, he could do something that’s even better than beating current lightweight champ Benson Henderson.
Edgar could become only the third man to win UFC gold in multiple divisions.
