For an injured fighter, Dan Henderson has certainly been doing a lot of talking, and quite frankly, Jon Jones is fed up with it.
In an interview with the Toronto Sun, the UFC light heavyweight champ blasted Henderson for running an ad encouraging fans to desecrate his t-shirt.
Jones, who has already endured hordes of drama following the UFC 151 fiasco, finds it a bit ironic Henderson, of all people, would be the one talking trash.
He came out with this ad that said, ‘Buy a Hendo shirt and get a free Jon Jones shirt to dry your car off with.’ You’re making fun of me, yet you got hurt and dodged a bullet? You’re sitting at home with ice on your knee and I’m here doing pushups again because I thought my camp should have been over. I have stuff to do and you’re sitting around your home playing video games, or whatever you do during the day.
Training camps suck, bro. Training camps suck. The fight is the fun part. So I’ve got to suffer all over again, do a training camp all over again, and you’re at home, laying down, having somebody feed you soup and you’re going to make fun of me because you got hurt?
Henderson was slated to fight Jones in the main event of UFC 151 on September 1, but a knee injury sustained during training forced him to withdraw a week out from the fight.
Chael Sonnen, Henderson’s friend and former training partner, offered to step in as a late replacement, but Jones opted not to take the fight, which subsequently led to the cancellation of the entire event.
Jones has taken the vast majority of the heat from the UFC and fans for not taking the fight with Sonnen on short notice. It hardly seems fair given the fact that Henderson’s injury initiated the domino effect of UFC 151’s demise.
During an interview with Ariel Helwani on Fuel TV’s UFC Tonight, UFC president Dana White admitted Henderson knew about the injury two weeks before informing him.
Given those extra two weeks, Jones may have decided to take the fight with Sonnen, and the UFC wouldn’t have had to pull the plug on the entire event.
If anything, Jones believes Henderson dodged a bullet. The 42-year-old legend is still as dangerous as they come, but Jones would’ve entered the fight a heavy favorite. Despite being a former Pride and Strikeforce champion, Henderson is 0-2 in UFC title bouts.
There’s some unfinished business, for sure. I don’t think Henderson handled the situation wisely, by making fun of me for not taking the fight [against Sonnen]. Dude, you just dodged a bullet and you’re talking trash to me? You got injured and you’re going to talk trash that I didn’t fight Chael?
You should shut up and be grateful you dodged a bullet.
