After a stretch of days that saw both Junior dos Santos and Georges St-Pierre dealing with knee injuries, we now have a bright spot to end the week when Jon Jones meets Lyoto Machida for the light heavyweight title at UFC 140.
Jones will fight for the fourth time this year and defend his title for the second time in the last four months. On this occasion, he is defending his title against a man who was once thought to be unbeatable in Machida.
Both fighters possess creative styles of striking, with Jones and his wacky strikes and Machida and his “can’t touch this” karate.
Next to Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans, Machida is seen as the one man whose style might be the Achilles’ heel of Jones, but will he be able to break the reach of his 24-year-old opponent? Will Jones take this fight to the ground and beat Machida that way?
On top of the main event, Frank Mir will meet Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in a heavyweight battle of two Top-10 heavyweights. Mir is fighting for the first time since he won a unanimous decision victory against Roy Nelson at UFC 130 in May, while Nogueira is fighting for the first time since his knockout victory over Brendan Schaub at UFC 134 in August.
Stay tuned to this blog by Antwyn Jackson and Sal DeRose for the results and reaction to the weigh-ins of UFC 140 on Friday at 4 p.m. EST.
