Gegard Mousasi is the No. 7-ranked middleweight in the world.
He’s 35-4, coming off a huge win over Mark Munoz at UFC Fight Night 41 and earned what appeared to be a No. 1 contender’s bout against Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza at UFC 176.
When that event got scrapped recently, one would think a distinguished fighter such as Mousasi would receive a phone call about the news.
Maybe even a text would do.
According to Mousasi, though, none of that happened. He learned his fight was canceled via social media.
Mousasi took out his frustrations on Facebook, sarcastically saying “good job ufc,” before immediately deleting the post. Thankfully, Sportsnet‘s James Lynch was quick on the draw and took a screenshot of the post before Mousasi scrambled for the delete button.
While that doesn’t look good for the UFC, there’s a second wrinkle to this story.
Early Wednesday morning, UFC President Dana White responded to a fan on Twitter who was begging for Mousasi vs. Jacare to get placed on the September 27 UFC 178 card.
While the fan will be disappointed to learn the bout won’t end up on that card, White did drop the bout’s new location, saying the fight would take place in “Foxwoods,” referring to Foxwoods, Connecticut, home of UFC Fight Night 50 on September 5.
I wonder if Mousasi knows that yet.
If not, I’m sure he’ll find out soon enough, and he’ll need to prepare for his rematch against the streaking Brazilian Souza. Mousasi previously defeated Jacare at Dream 6 in September 2008 via upkick, but both fighters have evolved since that time.
Souza, in particular, has honed his striking game, earning the first two knockouts of his career in his past five fights. He’s won six straight, and if he can avenge his loss to Mousasi at UFC Fight Night 50, he’ll be on the short list of contenders for Chris Weidman’s middleweight strap.
