A thumb injury derailed Robbie Lawler‘s plans to defend his welterweight title against Carlos Condit at UFC 193, but it didn’t take long for the two sides to reschedule their bout.
According to UFC.com’s Thomas Gerbasi, Lawler and Condit are officially scheduled to headline UFC 195 on Jan. 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
UFC confirmed the showdown with a post on Instagram:
No other fights for the UFC 195 card have been announced yet.
Lawler (26-10) and Condit (30-8) were originally slated to do battle in Melbourne, Australia, but a thumb injury suffered in training by the reigning champion put those plans on hold. UFC 193 is now headlined by a bantamweight championship bout between Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm at Etihad Stadium.
When the two fighters clash, Lawler, 33, will be looking to extend his UFC winning streak to five after rattling off victories again Jake Ellenberger, Matt Brown and Johny Hendricks before snagging a TKO triumph over Rory MacDonald at UFC 189’s co-main event in July.
Condit, on the other hand, only recently returned to action after suffering a torn ACL during a 2014 loss to Tyron Woodley. However, the 31-year-old didn’t disappoint as he downed Thiago Alves in a second-round TKO (doctor’s stoppage).
According to FoxSports.com’s Damon Martin, UFC 195 will mark the third time Condit has competed for the welterweight title belt after winning the interim belt in 2012.
With two of the sport’s top strikers finally set to meet in the Octagon, fans should be thrilled that Condit and Lawler were able to make the fight a reality as UFC looks to kick off 2016 in style.
