It was just over a week ago that UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey was seen and heard admonishing a fan for asking her about her sex life following a press conference.
The video that popped up on YouTube just after it happened shows Rousey reacting to a fan, who was yelling at her and asking how much she has sex before a fight.
“It’s not an appropriate question to ask,” Rousey shouted. “If your mother was standing behind you and heard you ask that question, what would she say to you?”
The question was one that Rousey has actually answered before on a couple of occasions, just not when a fan was the one asking it.
She appeared on the Conan O’Brien Show in August 2012 when he asked, “You have a big title fight coming up. A lot of boxers male athletes say it’s a superstition, don’t have sex, no sexual activity before a fight, and I’m just curious is that a superstition women have?”
Rousey responded in a composed manner and even laughed about the question when she was pressed by O’Brien.
Then in November 2012 when slated as a guest on Jim Rome’s show, which airs on Showtime with no filter or parental guidance standards, his question mirrored O’Brien’s.
“Some boxers abstain from sex for up to six weeks before the fight; what is your philosophy on this?” Rome stated.
Again, without hesitation, Rousey answered with a smile and a laugh and said, “For girls it raises your testosterone, so I try to have as much sex as possible before I fight.”
On Monday, Rousey appeared on the ESPN 2 show Dan LeBatard Is Highly Questionable, where the host brought up her recent reaction when a fan asked the question about her sex life.
Rousey first explained how the fan was not friendly the entire time she was appearing on stage with the other UFC fighters, and that really was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
“That guy was obnoxious through the whole press conference. He was screaming and trying to get up on stage to do a stare-down with Jon Jones. He was like going up and pushing people and saying, ‘Sign my head!’ I was trying to get to other people and not paying attention, and he was screaming, and he was like, ‘How many times do you have sex before a fight?’ And I was just like come on dude, I’m just up here trying to do my job,” Rousey said. “I’m trying to accommodate everybody.
“I told him if your mother was standing there right behind you, would you feel comfortable saying that to me right now?”
Rousey went on to explain that in the context of her past interviews, when that question came up, she understood it and answered because that’s the nature of interviews.
It’s not the same when a fan decides to ask those questions in an informal setting.
“In all those interviews where I would talk about sex, if my mom was in the room, she would laugh her ass off. Anything I feel comfortable saying in front of my mother, but those were in a professional environment where I’m (answering) questions,” Rousey explained.
“If I knew a porn star, and they were at work and they’ve got all kinds of things in their face, but if I met them on the street I wouldn’t walk up to them and be like, ‘So how was it having a hot dog in your face yesterday?’ No, it’s disrespectful. Even though that’s what they do for a living, I wouldn’t do that.”
Does Rousey have a point? Should those types of questions be left off the list for any fan approaching her at an event? Should those types of questions ever be asked by anybody in a professional setting either?
It seems Rousey has made her decision, and she gladly passed on that information to the fan and the rest of the world on Monday.
