Fans who watched last nights UFC on FUEL TV 8 co-main event between heavyweights Stefan Struve and Mark Hunt may have been left scratching their heads why referee Herb Dean called a stoppage in the third round.

Hunt would send Struve to the mat in the third after a solid left hook found it’s mark sending his opponent to the mat. Hunt would turn and walk away while Dean called for Struve to continue before calling for the stoppage at 1:44 of the round.

Struve hadn’t been knocked out he was simply unable to continue due to a broken jaw.

The Dutch fighter confirmed the injury following the fight at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan posting the news on Twitter (@StefanStruve).

Struve was sent to a Japanese hospital where he had his jaw wired shut and will undergo surgery once he returns home to Holland.

Thanks for the support everybody, I wanted Herb to take the tooth out of my cheek and continue but then it turned out my jaw was broken..

45 minutes to the hospital without painkillers.. Man, please choke me out.. Jaw is hurting like crazy.. 🙁
