When the lights went out early on Sunday morning in Oklahoma City’s Chesapeake Energy Arena, it marked the end of another mixed martial arts promotion.
The final event in the history of Strikeforce began on Saturday evening and wrapped up after midnight in the East. Just like that, the promotion that was once second to only the UFC joined the likes of Pride, Bodog, Affliction, Elite XC and countless others in the list of also-ran MMA promotions.
The 22 fighters that competed during Saturday’s final Strikeforce fight card will have some small place in MMA history. However, I doubt that the fact they helped to send the promotion off to the big nowhere will cause them to hold onto their uncashed paychecks as some kind of keepsake.
There’s no doubt that every one of the competitors will be signing those checks and cashing them. When they do, here is the amount that will show up in the amount payable section of each check (via MMAJunkie.com):
Tarec Saffiedine: $39,000 ($19,500 + $19,500 win bonus) defeated Nate Marquardt: $40,000.
