The first ever Ultimate Fighting Championship event held in Boston, “UFC 118: Edgar vs. Penn” drew a reported 15,575 fans to the TD Garden, bringing in a gate of approx. $3,000,000 according to the promotions president Dana White.
White made the announcement, as well as the “Fight Night” bonus winners, at the UFC 118 post-fight press conference.
Earning $60,000 “Fight Night” bonus checks were Nate Diaz, Marcus Davis, and Joe Lauzon.
The “Fight of the Night” honor were main card fighters Nate Diaz and Marcus Davis who battled it out for three rounds in the opening bout of the pay-per-view. Diaz opened a deep gash over Davis’ right eye in the first round, but the “Irish Hand Grenade” was allowed to carry on after a quick look from the ringside doctor. Diaz finally put an end to the fight in the third round by choking out Davis at 4:02 with a guillotine choke.
With five submission’s on the event card, Joe Lauzon’s dominant performance and first round armbar submission over opponent Gabe Ruediger earned him the “Submission of the Night” honor. The 2:01 fight was all Lauzon who put Ruediger on his back, passing guard and dropping bombs from top position. Eventually, Lauzon was able to grab Ruediger’s right arm to pull of an armbar submission.
With no KO’s occurring on the whole UFC 118 card, no “Knockout of the Night” bonus was handed out.
