In the co-main event of the evening, former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir went up against the man with the greatest mullet in the world—Roy Nelson.
The fight began with Mir working his jab. Nelson closed the distance quickly, and Mir was able to pin him up against the cage. Mir dropped for a double, but wasn’t able to finish it, and was reverse by Nelson. As they broke apart, Mir landed a big knee to Nelson’s dome that didn’t seem to phase him at all.
After another exchange on the feet, Nelson used his ample mid section to pin Mir against the cage. From there, Mir relentlessly started firing off knees and fists to Nelson’s face.
Nelson fired off a head kick of his own, only to be countered by Mir. Then while against the cage, Mir executed a perfect hip toss and got the mount. Nelson gave up his back, and then was able to get back to his feet before Mir could do anything with it.
In the second round, Nelson started the round coming forward looking to land a big right hand. Mir closed the distance, dropped down for a single, and got Nelson to the mat.
From Nelson’s half guard, Mir went old school as he covered Nelson’s mouth and landed some ground and pound. Nelson then scrambled and found his way back to his feet.
After another exchange, Mir got the fight back to the ground. However, he was unable to do any damage before Nelson found his way back to his feet.
Mir used this opportunity to land more knees to an exhausted Nelson. After nothing happened in the clinch, the referee broke them apart as the round ended.
The final round started off with Mir landing another knee and kick to Nelson, who’s movement as a whole was beginning to look labored.
After securing another takedown, Mir went to work with his ground and pound. Nelson was able to find his way back to his feet, only to be taken down once again with relative ease.
This time around, Mir landed some big, thudding elbows to Nelson’s face. Then, for some reason, Mir let him back to his feet right before the end of the fight.
The judges get put to work again, and all three gave the fight to Frank Mir (30-27, 30-27, 30-26).
