When Anderson Silva faces Yushin Okami in the main event at UFC 134, he will be facing the last fighter to score a victory over him. That victory, on January 20, 2006, was not without controversy as Okami won via disqualification due to an illegal upkick from Silva.
Since that time, Silva has gone on a 14-fight winning streak. Of those victories, 13 of them have been in the UFC. He has also defended the UFC middleweight title he took from Rich Franklin in 2006, eight times. Both the winning streak and consecutive title defenses are UFC records.
Silva has been called “the greatest mixed martial artist ever,” by UFC president Dana White.
Okami has gone 12-3 since his victory over Silva, with his losses coming to Jake Shields, Rich Franklin and Chael Sonnen. Okami is currently on a three-fight winning streak. On a recent UFC 134 media call, which Bleacher Report MMA sat in on, White declared that, “Yushin Okami is the best fighter ever to come out of Japan. This guy didn’t fight cans and get this built-up, mythological record.”
Recently, UFC Hall Of Famer Randy Couture sat down and offered his pick for the main event at UFC 134—see the video below to find out who “The Natural” picks:
