Matt Hughes looked really impressive in the first few minutes of his fight against Josh Koscheck at UFC 135.

Afterwards Hughes told UFC commentator, Joe Rogan, that he would ask the UFC to put him on the shelf for a while to let him get some rest.

Hughes now avoids yet another retirement speech and will continue his UFC Hall of Fame career.

But should Hughes do more then just sit on the shelf for a while?

Hughes showed some improvement even at age 37. Hughes’ striking looked better then it ever has before. Unfortunately for him, he fought a top three welterweight and was considered an underdog against Koscheck.

Hughes shouldn’t retire any time soon. I actually think him sitting on the shelf is a bad idea. Hughes looked good tonight and he should capitalize on it for another fight before the end of the year or at the beginning of 2012.

The bad thing for Hughes though is that he is 37 and his age does hinder him heavily at this point.

Hughes will eventually get one more fight and after that, again, his career will be up in the air and he will be badgered about questions of retirement.

This time though, Hughes might actually follow through on the retirement.
