This weekend, the Octagon will explode with some pretty exciting fights at UFC 143. The original main event, a box-office bonanza, pitted Nick Diaz against world champion Georges St-Pierre. When a serious knee injury sidelined St-Pierre, Carlos Condit was tabbed to replace the champion.
Now Condit and Diaz will battle for an interim title. It should be an exciting fight. Both fighters are all action and have similar levels of experience and skill. Diaz, however, never stops moving and coming forward. Over five rounds, that could prove to be the difference.
In the semi-main event, Fabricio Werdum makes his long awaited return to UFC action. UFC matchmaker Joe Silva has given the Brazilian a tough road to walk. Werdum is a submission master—his opponent, Roy “Big Country” Nelson, has never been beaten by submission. They say there’s a first time for everything; I expect Nelson to tap the mat and Werdum to take one step towards a title fight.
In the other featured bout of the evening, Josh Koscheck will take on up-and-comer Mike Pierce. Koscheck has his eye on the winner of Diaz-Condit. He’s come up short when trying to take home the UFC title in the past. No doubt he’d love to walk through Pierce and then take on the new interim champion for the title that has eluded him throughout his career.
