UFC 159 went down Saturday from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
And I have to say: UFC 159 was a strange bird. Whatever the most disgusting, nauseating species of bird is, that’s the kind of bird UFC 159 was.
Yancy Medeiros had to throw in the towel after a freak thumb dislocation during his fight with Rustam Khabilov. Not one but two fights ended early after major eye pokes—the second time, it was in the co-main event, when Michael Bisping buried a finger in the right eye (the previously surgically repaired right eye) of Alan Belcher.
Jon Jones defended his light heavyweight title against Chael Sonnen in the main event but suffered an absolutely ghastly broken big left toe at some point during the proceedings.
But there were also good fights and stoppages (of the more conventional sort) across the card. Four fighters took home bonus checks for their achievements, with each bonus win garnering $65,000 for the winner.
Submission of the Night went to lightweight Pat Healy, who finished Jim Miller late in the final round of a very balanced fight. Healy forced a rear-naked choke on Miller with less than a minute remaining in the contest.
Healy‘s return to the UFC turned out to be a successful and lucrative one, as his win also earned him a Fight of the Night bonus check, along with Miller.
To the surprise of few, Roy Nelson took home the Knockout of the Night award with his first-round knockout of Cheick Kongo.
It was the third consecutive first-round knockout win for Nelson and his titanic right hand. It was also the fourth time Nelson received a Knockout of the Night bonus in his UFC career. He was last honored with the bonus following his knockout of Dave Herman last May at UFC 146.
