“Greatness within reach.”
That’s the UFC’s marketing slogan for UFC 165, which takes place next week from Toronto.
Greatness within reach. That tagline is supposed to make you believe that Jon Jones, the greatest light heavyweight champion in history and the current pound-for-pound king, has finally met his match in Alexander Gustafsson.
Because, for so long, Jones’ detractors have discussed the reach advantage he has over every other opponent in the Octagon. That’s why he wins so easily, they say. Just wait until he faces someone his own size, they mutter.
That moment has come.
Gustafsson is taller than Jones, and the UFC’s marketing hype is focusing on their respective reaches. I suppose you could also say that it references Jones being one win away from breaking Tito Ortiz’s light heavyweight title defense record but not really. It’s mostly designed to make you believe that here, now, is a man who can finally match Jones.
But is it true?
In my latest video preview for UFC 165, I take a look at the main event and give you a rock-solid prediction.
As always, I urge you to watch the video and then leave me your own predictions in the comments below.
