Former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar makes his featherweight debut in February against belt-holder Jose Aldo. But at the moment, he’s worrying about more important things.
In late October, Superstorm Sandy tore through New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and several other states. Hard-hit areas included Edgar’s hometown of Toms River, N.J. All told, the storm left dozens of people dead and millions without power. As cold weather begins to set in, 370,000 New Jersey residents still do not have electricity, according to estimates. Looting and similar crimes are becoming more problematic.
“It’s bad, man,” Edgar told journalist Ariel Helwani Wednesday on The MMA Hour broadcast. “Some places might not have power until Thanksgiving…Some people are looting, man. People who do that, they should be shot for that.”
Edgar did have some good news to report, as his own home and family seemed to escape major damage.
“We lucked out,” Edgar said. “My neighborhood had a lot of trees down. We were out of power for about five days…We had a little generator. It was kind of like camping.”
Unfortunately, many other areas were “demolished,” Edgar said. In response, he’s been helping out at local shelters. On Nov. 15, Edgar will help lend his support on a much larger stage when he appears on Restore the Shore, a telethon designed to raise money to rebuild Seaside Heights, N.J. The telethon airs on MTV and will feature the cast of MTV’s popular Jersey Shore reality show.
“They asked me, and I said, ‘Whatever I can do to help, I’m there,'” Edgar said.
