Generally being considered a top 10 light heavyweight, it would not be too crazy if the UFC higher brass offered Phil Davis a title shot at 205 pounds after a win over perennial contender Rashad Evans.
The two will square off in the Octagon at UFC on FOX 2 on Jan. 28th. However, even with an upset victory that propels “Mr. Wonderful” up the rankings, he said he has no problem waiting for a title shot.
“You can give it to Hendo and there will still be a belt when I get there,” Davis told MMA Mania on Wednesday. “There will still be a belt when I get there,” Davis emphasized.
Davis, 27, legitimately seemed to have no issues with sitting back in the wings and waiting for a title shot if the UFC was on the fence about giving Henderson, 41, the next shot in line.
“Give it to Hendo. I ain’t losing. Give it to Hendo. I don’t care either way,” Davis said.
“I don’t care who the person is that has the belt but there will be a belt when I get to it and that’s all that I’m concerned about. If somebody else gets to fight the champ before I do, that’s fine with me.”
UFC President Dana White recently said that Jon Jones “wants to fight as soon as possible” and a fight with Dan Henderson could be next in line.
However, Dan Henderson just turned down a fight with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, so it seems like a logical conclusion to believe that the UFC has already changed their mind about who will be fighting “Bones” next.
While Davis has no qualms about waiting for a chance at 12 pounds of gold, if Rashad Evans beats him at the end of the month, it is unlikely that “Suga” would share the same point of view.
There has been talk of Evans battling for the light heavyweight gold since mid-2010, so with a win over Mr. Wonderful, it would be hard to argue that Evans should be the man to take on his former training partner, Jon Jones.
