UFC welterweight prospect Rory MacDonald will have the biggest test of his career in front of him next Saturday when he takes on BJ Penn at UFC on FOX 5. That doesn’t mean he isn’t entertaining ideas for his next fight.

In an interview with MMA Weekly, “Ares” emphatically stated that he’d like to welcome Nick Diaz back to the Octagon early next year:

I would fight him. [He comes back] in February, and I might be ready to fight in like March or something like that. He might be my next fight after B.J., you never know how it works…I’d love to fight him.

Should the Tri-Star gym standout ever encounter the Cesar Gracie black belt there would be a revenge factor involved: MacDonald tossed around Nate Diaz en route to unanimous decision victory at UFC 129 in April 2011.

Nick Diaz is serving the tail end of a suspension issued by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for when he tested positive for marijuana metabolites in his post-UFC 143 drug test.

Despite losing that interim welterweight title bout with Carlos Condit in February, Diaz remains firmly in the title conversation, with current champion Georges St-Pierre’s trainer even proclaiming Diaz is the current No. 1 contender

MacDonald may be late to the party on this one though, as Josh Koscheck and Cesar Gracie agree that they would like the former title challenger to welcome Nick Diaz back to the cage in 2013.

Of course, at the end of the day, it’s UFC matchmaker Joe Silva’s call to see who ends up fighting who.

MacDonald vs. Nick Diaz: a “Fight of the Night” waiting to happen or a potential snoozefest?
