The win Jim Miller scored over Melvin Guillard this past Saturday on the UFC on FX 1 card was a real step in the right direction, but a rematch opposite either Frankie Edgar or Benson Henderson should not follow just yet.

Miller needed a win to prove he still belonged in the title scene, and when he took a monstrous shot from Guillard and still managed to get the back of Guillard for a rear-naked choke for the win, he seemed to make his case, but he’s not out of the woods yet.

Luckily for Miller, he earned the Submission of the Night bonus, which works well at a time in which Daniel Miller Jr., the nephew of the UFC on FX 1 headliner and the second child of Jim’s brother Dan, has publicly been battling polycystic kidney disease.

What may not come with such luck is a title shot, but of course Jim Miller has earned a top-level opponent.

The logical first choice for the New Jersey native’s next opponent is the winner of the rumored UFC 145 bout between Gray Maynard and Clay Guida.

Guida pushes the type of pace one needs to put Miller in any sort of trouble, and Maynard’s seven-fight streak of decision wins includes a UFC 96 win over Miller. While Miller vs. Guida would be a dream lightweight fight, Miller might not have reservations about avenging the first loss of his UFC career, as Miller and Maynard are both better fighters than they were at UFC 96.
