The UFC on FX 5 has come and gone, and the fights were certainly exciting. With only three decisions on the entire card, that means an incredible 70 percent of fights ended before the final buzzer.
Awards for the card were valued at $40,000 each and were given away in the standard categories of Fight of the Night, Knockout of the Night and Submission of the Night.
The featherweights took home the Fight of the Night awards after stealing the show on the undercard when strikers Diego Nunes and Bart Palaszewski threw leather for 15 minutes in an exciting affair.
Another candidate for the award was Mike Pierce versus Aaron Simpson. The first round was dominated by Simpson, who rocked his opponent with punches and clinch knees. However, Pierce landed a perfectly timed counter-right in the second round for the knockout.
With two bonuses only inches from their grasp, Pierce and Simpson just barely missed out on the Knockout of the Night award as well.
Ultimate Fighter runner-up Michael Johnson would earn the bonus for his second-round knockout of Danny Castillo from Team Alpha Male. The stoppage came after a short left hand put Castillo down, and a series of right hands on the ground left Castillo lying limp on the canvas.
Three submissions occurred on the card. On the preliminary portion of the card, Darren Uyenoyama made a successful flyweight debut when he secured a rear-naked choke against Phil Harris. Additionally, Jacob Volkmann used the same maneuver on Shane Roller to earn his first Octagon stoppage in nine fights.
Ultimately, the Submission of the Night honors went to Justin Edwards for his slick arm-in guillotine choke that put veteran Josh Neer to sleep.
