The wait is almost over MMA fans. Your nightmare of three consecutive weekends without a UFC card will end May 18 when the promotion travels to Brazil to put on the UFC on FX 8 fight card.
The main event of Saturday’s card will feature a bout between former UFC champion Vitor Belfort and the last man to hold the Strikeforce middleweight title, Luke Rockhold.
Belfort (22-10) enters the fight with a 4-2 record in his last six UFC contests. The only two losses in that time came against middleweight champion Anderson Silva and light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. His most recent fight, a second-round, head-kick TKO win over Michael Bisping in January 2013 earned him “Knockout of the Night” honors.
Rockhold (10-1) hasn’t tasted defeat since his second professional bout, a first-round TKO loss to Tony Rubalcava in 2007. In addition to making his UFC debut on the FX 8 card, Rockhold is coming off a long layoff. The last time Rockhold stepped in the cage was July 2012 when he defeated Tim Kennedy via unanimous decision. Since that win, he saw two fights scrapped due to injury.
The potential for an early ending in this one is pretty high, as both fighters are known for early stoppage victories. Of Rockhold’s 10 wins, eight have come via first-round stoppage, and Belfort has 15 first-round stoppage wins in his career.
Rick J. Lee recently had the opportunity to sit down with welterweight contender Jake Ellenberger to get his take on the fight.
Ellenberger has a tough time with this one. What about you, who are you picking in the UFC on FX 8 main event?
