The second bout on the card saw a welterweight bout featuring Matt Brown and John Howard.
The first round saw Howard pressure his opponent early with leg kicks, before both men tied up and clinched alongside the cage. Brown shoved off Howard and attempted to land a head kick but his opponent blocked it. Brown threw another kick but Howard caught it, attempted a takedown, but landed underneath Brown.
Howard continued to land kicks from the outside, but Brown got inside and landed a combo. Howard went for a takedown once again and eventually got his opponent down, but Brown quickly got back to his feet and successfully took down Howard after he landed a knee from inside the clinch. Howard appeared to be hurt and Brown attempted a submission, but nothing materialized, and both men stood up.
This time, Howard took Brown to the canvas and landed in half guard but Brown utilized his legs from his guard to return to his feet. Howard, again, took Brown down but he quickly retreated back to his feet. Brown started to land some combinations before the round came to a close.
The second round opened, as both competitors attempted takedowns on one another but failed. Howard and Brown clinched against the cage as Howard had a hold of his opponent’s leg and tried to apply a guillotine choke, but both fighters separate. Brown landed a hard knee and tripped Howard, landing in his half-guard. Neither fighter amounted much offense in the guard, but Howard looked to secure an arm and a leg, however Brown broke free and Howard landed on top of his opponent. While in the guard, Brown attempted an omoplota but the round concluded.
The third round saw Howard come out and land a couple of leg kicks early on and pressure Brown. Brown shot in and took Howard down, but Howard stood up and tried to lock in a guillotine. However, Howard took his opponent’s back, but Brown denied him of the submission. Howard looked for a single-leg, but again, Brown stuffed it.
Howard tried once again, but Brown stuffed it once more. Then, Brown landed some hard strikes, which appeared to hurt “Doomsday”, as he ran away to create some space, and Brown chased him. Howard attempted another single-leg, but was denied again. He then got a hold of a bodylock on Brown and eventually took him to the canvas. Brown started to land short elbows from half-guard, Howard looked to lock in a kimura but the bell sounded to signal the end of the bout.
All three judges awarded the bout to Brown, 29-28, as he earned the unanimous decision.
