Dominick Cruz defeated Mighty Mouse Demetrious Johnson and has now effectively beaten everybody in the top six of the bantamweight rankings.
His UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson fight results in a big unanimous decision victory which saw Cruz finally face someone who not only kept up with his pace, but an opponent who set the pace himself throughout the fight.
Cruz is 19-1 and has no challenger for the hypothetical best bantamweight fighter in MMA history crown. Saturday night marked ten straight victories for Cruz, including a win over Urijah Faber—the only man to beat Cruz.
The only other guy that could compare is Miguel Torres. Torres made three defenses of his WEC bantamweight belt before losing to Brian Bowles—the man who Cruz stole the belt from.
On top of those title defenses, Torres amassed an impressive 36-1 record. Only problem is a good chunk of those 37 fights were against unknown competition in local/regional fights.
Cruz, on the other hand, has compiled impressive wins over the best of the best that the bantamweight division has to offer.
Ian McCall (current Tachi Palace Fights flyweight champion), Johnson, Bowles, Faber, Scott Jorgensen and two wins over Joseph Benavidez are all on Cruz’s resume.
While he may not finish opponents, he still does beat them in impressive fashion with his high-octane striking style—hitting opponents from the weirdest of angles, bouncing in and out, all while taking little to no damage.
Cruz wasn’t himself against Johnson, and that is pretty scary considering he could have performed at a much higher level.
