On Wednesday, after the UFC on Fox 2 press conference, Dana White finally had some news on the status of the 125-pound flyweight division in the UFC.
Dana White was quoted as saying: “It’s happening, I told you guys it’s happening, and it’s happening.”
When asked when, White responded: “This weekend, I should have something by the weekend.”
It was very likely that the recent success of The Ultimate Fighter had an influence on White’s decision to make the flyweight division happen now.
In fact, the winner in the bantamweight division, John Dodson, is arguably a top-10 flyweight fighter. Additionally, Louis Gaudinot, another veteran from the most recent season of TUF, is also a ranked flyweight.
White believes that the 125-pound division could become one of the most stacked in the UFC, and undoubtedly one of the most exciting.
Right now, a number of the top 10 flyweights are housed in the organization Tachi Palace Fights. Several of those fighters, notably Ian McCall, Darrell Montague, Jussier da Silva and Ulysses Gomez have expressed interest in joining the UFC.
You would also be likely to see several current bantamweights, such as Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson, drop to flyweight.
Stay tuned to B/R MMA for updates on the UFC flyweight division, and MMA in general.
