How Jack Hermansson and Marvin Vettori compare in key stats heading into UFC Vegas 16
The UFC middleweight title picture is muddled. Current champion Israel Adesanya seems to be in line to face light heavyweight titleholder Jan Blachowicz in early 2021. That leaves fighters like Jack Hermansson and Marvin Vettori, who meet in the main event of Saturday’s UFC Vegas 16 fight card, to jockey for position in the rankings while Adesanya looks to become a two-division UFC champion.
Hermansson was close to a title shot in 2019. He was on a four fight winning streak and was coming off a five-round decision win over Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza when he was matched up against Jared Cannonier in September 2019. Cannonier put an end to Hermansson’s title hopes when he scored a second-round TKO win. Hermansson bounced back from that defeat with a first-round submission win over former interim middleweight title challenger Kelvin Gastelum.
Vettori, who has won three straight since he dropped a split decision to Adesanya in April 2018, was set to face Souza at UFC 256, but the UFC moved Vettori to this week’s event after Hermansson’s initial opponent, Kevin Holland, tested positive for COVID-19. Vettori is coming off a June submission win over Karl Roberson.
According to the official UFC rankings, Hermansson is the No. 4 middleweight. Vettori checks in at No. 13 in the 185-pound rankings.
