When Michael Bisping shocked the world by knocking out Luke Rockhold to become the new UFC Middleweight Champion of the world, it was supposed to be the night that former champion Chris Weidman received his immediate rematch for the title he held for multiple years.

Instead, Weidman was getting surgery to repair his injured neck, an injury that forced him to pull out of the 6/4 bout against Rockhold in Inglewood, California.

According to MMAFighting.com, Weidman underwent successful neck surgery performed by Dr. K. Daniel Riew in New York on Wednesday.

The MMA Fighting report claims that Weidman is of the impression that he will be starting physical therapy and strength training on Thursday and will be resuming “hard MMA sparring” in approximately six weeks.

Weidman is reportedly hoping to recover in time to fight at the UFC 205 event, which will be the first-ever UFC event held at Madison Square Garden on November 12th in Weidman’s home state of New York.
