Over the past several years, the Ultimate Fighting Championship has established themselves as one of the world’s fastest growing organizations.
A major reason for the UFC’s success if credited to the world class fighters who provide entertainment and excitement to those watching around the world.
In return, the UFC gives these fighters the opportunity to fight at the highest level of mixed martial arts and a chance to be classified as “great.”
However, in order to be considered great, these fighters must accomplish one major goal.
That goal is to become a UFC champion.
The UFC is built upon seven weight divisions which have an identical number of title holders.
Over the recent decade, we’ve seen champions reign and go years without losing their highly treasured championship belt.
However, we’ve also seen champions fall from their throne to defeat.
This leads us to one question.
Who Will Be the First UFC Champion to Lose Their title?
While nothing is ever set in stone, there are a few champions who’ve made us believe they will never be dethroned due to their spectacular performances.
These champions consist of George St-Pierre, Anderson Silva and Jon Jones.
George St-Pierre will take on Nick Diaz in one of the most anticipated matches in UFC history at UFC 143 on February 4th, 2012.
Anderson Silva will also take on Chael Sonnen, but the date for the fight is yet to be determined due to Silva’s injury.
Meanwhile, Jon Jones will square off with the highly dangerous Lyoto Machida at UFC 140 on December 10th, 2011.
Along with this elite class are champions like Jose Aldo and Dominick Cruz who’ve made the transition to the highest stage of mixed marital arts when the UFC and WEC joined forces.
It has been recently announced that Aldo will put his title up for grabs when he meets No. 1 contender Chad Mendes at UFC 142 on January 14th, 2012.
Cruz will more than likely await the winner of Urijah Faber vs. Dominick Cruz at UFC 139.
While Aldo and Cruz haven’t been around the UFC for an overwhelming amount of time, they have dominated nearly every opponent that’s come their way.
This leaves us with two champions in Frankie Edgar and Junior Dos Santos.
Edgar won’t take on No. 1 contender Ben Henderson until February 26th, 2012 at UFC 144.
Dos Santos, on the other hand, will await the winner of Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem at UFC 141 on December 30th, 2011.
While Edgar didn’t appear to be in danger of losing his title anytime soon, Henderson arose to the scene in impressive fashion with his victory over Clay Guida at UFC on FOX I.
Henderson demonstrated exceptional strength as Guida failed time and time again in taking him down.
While Edgar will be Henderson’s toughest opponent to date, “Bendo” appears to be in championship form.
With Dos Santos not likely to fight until mid 2012, Edgar may be the first champion to be dethroned.
Having said that…
Who do you think will be the first UFC champion to lose their title?
