It is being rumored that Fabricio Werdum is on his way back to the world’s premier mixed martial arts organization, the UFC.
Even if he doesn’t come back to the UFC just yet, it is inevitable that he will eventually find his way back to his former organization.
During his first stint with the UFC, he went 2-2, and was cut after the second loss.
His first fight was a unanimous decision loss to Andrei Arlovski, but he rebounded after that with TKO victories over Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera.
Then he met Junior dos Santos.
At the time, JDS was just a 24-year-old kid with a 6-1 professional record, making his debut in the biggest MMA organization in the world.
Werdum was likely one or two fights away from a title shot, and JDS was just seen as a formality.
But that all changed in 81 seconds, as JDS floored Werdum with a huge uppercut, knocking him clean out.
After that, Werdum was cut from the UFC. Since that time, he has gone 3-1 in Strikeforce, with wins over Mike Kyle, Antonio Silva and Fedor Emelianenko before losing to Alistair Overeem.
When he returns to the UFC, he will likely still be viewed as a top-10 heavyweight, and should be given a good test.
That test should be Brendan Schaub.
Schaub is known for for taking on seasoned veterans of MMA, and is gaining a reputation as a legend killer.
Not only would the matchup make sense for both fighters, as each would need a solid test, but Schaub and Werdum have recently talked back and forth in the media, showing an interest in fighting each other.
Schaub needs another big name on his resume to get him back in the mix. Werdum could send Schaub back down the ladder, putting himself in contention with a win.
This fight would decide if the future of MMA is here, or if it’s going to have to wait a while longer.
