UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is undoubtedly one of the best fighters in the world today. The 31-year-old French-Canadian has some of the best skills in MMA today, although his style sometimes aggravates fans.
Despite his occasionally boring style, GSP deserves a tremendous amount of respect. Let’s take a look at some facts.
St-Pierre has been ranked as the No. 1 welterweight in the world for several years. He has won and defended a championship in the most prominent MMA organization in the world to date. He is also one of only two Canadians to ever be a UFC title holder.
With his win over Nick Diaz now in the books, “Rush” broke the record for most welterweight title defenses in UFC history. This mark was previously held by Matt Hughes. St-Pierre also tied another record held by Hughes for the most wins out of any UFC fighter with 18.
The stats don’t end there. The French-Canadian is also the fighter with the most completed takedowns and significant strikes landed during his tenure under the Zuffa banner.
St-Pierre hasn’t lost a fight since 2007. He has defeated names such as Carlos Condit, Nick Diaz, Matt Hughes, B.J. Penn and more throughout his illustrious career. His record in the UFC currently stands at an impressive 18 wins with only two losses.
Many people believe the style of GSP to be boring. I believe you need to take into account exactly what he’s doing to his opponents. He is able to out-work, out-think and thoroughly dominate his foes on the path to victory.
Whatever his opponents can do, he can do better. St-Pierre is a true talent through and through. He deserves more respect based on everything he has done in his time inside the Octagon. He’s a phenomenal talent and is a guaranteed future Hall of Famer.
