Max Holloway welcomes interim title fight with former UFC champion Jose Aldo in Hawaii

Max Holloway’s name might not ring a bell in most households, but the UFC Featherweight contender is steadfast on attaining a 145-pound title shot.

“Blessed” would be recognized as one of the Top 3 fighters in his division, but when you have the names Conor McGregor, Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar in front of you, it’s kind of hard to shine.

Holloway was sat following his unanimous-decision win over past training partner Jeremy Stephens at the UFC 194 pay-per-view (PPV) last December because he needed thumb surgery.

His win over “Lil Heathen” was his eighth in as many tries and with his cast set to come off this upcoming Thursday (Feb. 18, 2016), the 24-year-old dynamic striker can start to plot his route to a title. And for Holloway, he would like a return fight against none other than ex-champion Jose Aldo.

From Holloway’s conversation with media last weekend in Las Vegas:

“He’s been the champ for so long, I don’t see why not. The only thing I see is he got hurt in that first fight. That kind of cost a lot and then that 13-second fight. It sucks, but I think that injury put it into play. He say he fight for a title and whatever. We’ll see how this Conor McGregor stuff goes. Why not do an interim title between Aldo and Holloway in Hawaii? That would be freaking ideal. We’ll see.”

As it stands, McGregor will be putting his featherweight belt into storage while he attempts to win a second belt off of lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196 in less than a month. “Junior” isn’t too happy that “Notorious” threw out their secret deal and won’t accept any fight unless it’s for the strap he dropped in 13 seconds.

UFC president Dana White is coming around to the idea of an Aldo title fight, but those plans will likely hinge on the outcome of dos Anjos vs McGregor.

“The Answer” might be available, however, he’s also concentrating on getting what he deserves.

Where does this leave Holloway? Possibly on the outside looking in.

Before the MMA world had heard of Kevin Randleman and his superhero like athletic prowness, he was a dominating college wrestler dominating the NCAA scene. I was wrestling in the same era as Randleman a few years behind him and could not believe his dominance on the mat. Throw in the fact that his physique was by far the most impressive in all of NCAA sports at that time and maybe ever.

I read about him as a high school senior and freshman in college in all the wrestling publications looking over his results until 1994 when I qualified for the NCAA tourney myself. It was that weekend I met him personally.

I was in the warm up area and he was in the 177lbs class and I was right below him at 167lbs. I was able to approach him to tell him what an idol he was of mine and how good it was to meet him. He responded by saying, “Thank you very much but your here now my man. Your in the game now. Your here now. Do your thing.”

That response resignated with me and I never forgot what he said. He basically told me to stop being a “deer in headlights” and get focused and it is spot on with everyone else’s experiences when meeting him.

Later on in the weekend I watched him win his second NCAA title from the stands as a spectator and he was as impressive as ever. My coach at the time(Jeff Ellis) said laughing that, “not all men are created equal… Whoever said that never met this guy”.

He finished as Ohio State’s most successful wrestler at that time finishing with 108 wins. He was unable to finish his career and did not participate in his senior season due to academic issues. He still had 4 of the 10 quickest falls in NCAA history including an 8 second fall and three big ten titles as well.

I did not follow him closely or MMA during the early days because I was doing other things and MMA was not legal in Pennsylvania so I really had no plans in competing. After reading about his MMA career and his accomplishments, it does not surprise me that he a won UFC gold and went head to head with all the top notch athletes such as Bas Rutton , Randy Couture and Pedro Rizzo. That was the class he belonged in.

RIP Kevin Randleman

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey may be awaiting her anticipated return to the Octagon, but her nude body paint photos in Sports Illustrated have been stirring up a ton of attention without her having to get punched in the face.

The photos leaked earlier this year, with two sets boasting Rousey wearing nothing but artistic body paint for the magazine’s longtime Swimsuit Edition, but last night (Sat., February 13, 2016) her modeling career was propelled to the next level when ‘Rowdy’ would join Ashley Graham and Hailey Clauson as one of three cover models of this year’s issue, which debuts at newsstands on Monday, February 15, at “Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Revealed 2016.”

Scott Coker diplomatic over ‘not happy’ champ Will Brooks

Will Brooks recently put Bellator on front street for what he sees as their disinterest in promoting him. But, to hear promotional front man Scott Coker tell it, that’s fine.

It’s not that Scott Coker doesn’t seem to understand that Will Brooks isn’t happy. He’s just not making a bigger public deal out of it than his lightweight champion. Brooks made his feelings about his current contract situation and Bellator’s treatment of him in a recent series of Tweets, saying that Bellator may have “decided not to use any resources” on promoting him after he made the decision to fight out his contract rather than signing an extension.

Brooks added that, as such, he would “do what’s best for [himself] and accomplish [his] next goal,” going on to make clear that he had already accomplished what he had set out for upon singing to Bellator. Whether this means his “next goal” could be possibly accomplished with a bigger Bellator contract, or if it’s something that can only be reached by fighting somewhere else isn’t entirely clear as of yet. But, signs seem to be pointing toward the latter.

And in Scott Coker’s world, that seems to be all fine and dandy. Coker recently spoke to MMAFighting about Brooks’ recent outpouring and he sounded pretty diplomatic about the whole thing:

“This is how it works,” Coker said. “Fighters are happy until they’re not happy. Right now, he’s not happy. That could change. I don’t take it personally. It’s just part of the business. If he’s gonna yap, he’s gonna yap. That’s just how it is.”

“I think he’s a good fighter,” Coker said. “I think we’ll offer him some more fights and we’ll fight him out. Then, we’ll see. Free agency is gonna work both ways. Is he a fighter that we would go way out of our way to re-sign? I can’t answer that.”

It’s not exactly the high drama MMA fans are used to when it comes to unhappiness between fighters and promoters, but it’s a bit refreshing to hear two sides that seem to be keeping things as open ended and realistic as possible, rather than resorting to tearing one another down.

What, you thought the rivalry was over?

A few weeks after Dominick Cruz returned to the Octagon to reclaim his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Bantamweight title by defeating T.J. Dillashaw at UFC Fight Night 81 (video replay here), “The Viper” is still heated with how everything went down.

That’s why he took to Instagram to blast Cruz for his running fighting style, saying that all he’ll need for the rematch is a good pair of sneakers and pillows, and obvious blow to what he perceives as lack of punching power on the part of Cruz.

His post (via Fox Sports):

Burn.

There’s no guarantee T.J. will get an instant do-over against “The Dominator,” as Urijah Faber is currently on the campaign trail to get his trilogy bout against Cruz.

Of course, UFC matchmakers could make it easier and have Faber and Dillashaw mix it up inside the Octagon to see who deserves the right to vie for the 135-pound strap next.

After all, the beef between the former teammates is already built in.

Donald Cerrone: I’ll Fight P-ssy Conor McGregor

Donald Cerrone is always looking to fight and has no problem with fighting anyone, at any time. Cerrone, who is set to fight Alex Oliveira at UFC Fight Night 83 in the main event, is coming off a loss to Rafael dos Anjos at UFC on FOX 17. Cerrone knows what it’s like to fight the Anjos, and soon UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor will step inside the world famous Octagon and experience that for himself.

Cerrone recently spoke with MMA Junkie about his upcoming fight with Oliveira and revealed that he would be willing to fight McGregor at 155 (lightweight).

“Give me Conor McGregor. I’ll fight that p-ssy. Other than that, I don’t care,” Cerrone said.

The reason for the call out is because Cerrone is tired of McGregor calling out welterweights. According to Cerrone, McGregor needs to slow his roll.

“Tell that dude to slow his f-cking roll. You can’t be just calling out 170-pounders. So, whatever. Enough of him.”

Cerrone and McGregor have exchanged words in the past, so if McGregor can beat dos Anjos and hold on to the lightweight title for sometime and Cerrone can string along some wins to get him back into the title hunt, then a fight between the two could be made.
