It has now been one year since Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov passed away.

The father of former UFC lightweight champion Khabib passed away at the age of 57 on July 3, 2020 after complications stemming from COVID-19.

It was a hard time not only for the Nurmagomedovs and everyone in Dagestan, but the entire mixed martial arts community given the influence Abdulmanap had on one of the greatest fighters of all time and his son in Khabib.

One year on, and Nurmagomedov reflected on his father’s passing on Instagram.

“It’s been a year today since the Father is gone,” Khabib wrote on Instagram. “This event has increased my belief that in this world we own nothing, not out children, not our parents, not our property. Everything we have is temporary.

“All things belong to Allah alone and to Him we shall return, tie your hearts to Allah, stay more alone with Him, for a time will come when we will all be put in the grave where we will be alone, where our friends, relatives, property and connections will not be there, only our deeds and report.”

Nurmagomedov would compete one last time afterward when he defeated Justin Gaethje via second-round submission to defend his lightweight title at UFC 254 back in October.

He would retire soon after as he revealed he had promised his mother that he would no longer compete. And it looks like it will remain that way despite the efforts of many.

A huge mural has been painted in Derbent City, Dagestan paying tribute to Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov who is the late father and coach of UFC lightweight king Khabib Nuramgomedov. Abdulmanap, unfortunately, passed away earlier this year due to complications stemming from contracting COVID-19.

Boss Logic penned the original image as a tribute to the late, great MMA coach. The artist was delighted to see his work currently being added to the side of a building in Dagestan, taking to social media to share the “beautiful” news, he wrote.

“This is beautiful, this mural of my tribute for @khabib_nurmagomedov and his father is in Derbent city, Dagestan.”

Since the passing of his father Khabib has fought and beat interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje. The undefeated Russian mauler needed just two rounds to choke out the decorated wrestler. Post-fight Khabib announced his retirement from the sport and expressed a lack of desire to compete due to the passing of his father, he said.

“Today I want to say this was my last fight. No way I’m going to come here without my father. It was first time after what happened with my father, when UFC called me about Justin, I talk with my mother three days. She doesn’t want me to go fight without my father but I promised her it was going to be my last fight.

“If I give my word, I have to follow this. It was my last fight here.”

Despite reports suggesting he will return Khabib has since doubled down on his retirement plans.

“This fight was like no other,” Nurmagomedov said. “The emotions in this fight were completely different. Everything was completely different without my father. I was offered the fight right after everything happened. I had the decision to accept it or turn it down, nobody knew about this, or retire, or I could come back, fight and then retire. Now I tell the people close to me that aren’t happy with me retiring that even if I fought 10 more times, I’d still have to face that decision. This decision could come up when I’m 32, 34, 35. It’s a hard decision because I’ve been fighting all my life. I’ve been on the mats for as long as I remember. It’s difficult to leave and do something else. People can’t understand it, but what can you do?”

Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s upcoming fight against Justin Gaethje will certainly be an emotional affair.

Nurmagomedov meets Gaethje in a lightweight title unification fight at UFC 254 next weekend in what will be his first fight since the tragic death of his father Abdulmanap.

And in a tribute to the late Nurmagomedov, BT Sport released an emotional animated promo dedicated to the duo.

You can watch it below:

Khabib and his father were naturally close, but they were closer than most given Abdulmanap was also his best friend and coach.

“I’m sure everyone in this room lost someone,” Nurmagomedov told media back in August. “A friend, a neighbor, a cousin, a mother, a father, girlfriend. Everyone goes through loss, I understand that. But on the other hand it’s very difficult. Some people have strictly a father-son relationship, but my father was very close to me. We were like friends. He was my father and coach, we were always together. We were very close. Of course I’m sad.

“… If I tell you with a straight face that it doesn’t affect my training, that’d be a lie. It does affect me, I think about him all the time. Maybe this pain will put me on another level and make me stronger. Any challenge either breaks you or makes you stronger. We’ll see what it does to me in time.”

We’ll get to see how Nurmagomedov responds in the Octagon in less than a week.

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has openly discussed his sadness following the death of his father and coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov last month.

Nurmagomedov Sr. died on July 3 after several months of battling health complications brought on by the coronavirus. The 57-year-old first fell ill in April with pneumonia-like symptoms, but COVID-19 was not confirmed. The renowned MMA coach told media he was feeling fine after his health scare but then his condition quickly deteriorated. Nurmagomedov was sent to a Russian military hospital for further treatment, it was there he tested positive for the coronavirus before suffering a heart attack brought on by the disease. He appeared to be on the mend after awaking from his medically induced coma but ultimately succumbed to the illness.

The undefeated Russian fighter revealed he is still very sad following the passing of his father during a recent press conference.

“I’m sure everyone in this room lost someone,” Nurmagomedov said to media including RT Sport. Of course I’m sad.”

Nurmagomedov is currently preparing for a lightweight unification fight against interim champion Justin Gaethje. The pair are expected to clash at UFC 254 on October 24.

‘The Eagle’ admits his training has been affected by his grief but says he is hoping he can come through this adversity stronger than before.

“If I tell you with a straight face that it doesn’t affect my training, that’d be a lie,” he said. “It does affect me, I think about him all the time. Maybe this pain will put me on another level and make me stronger. Any challenge either breaks you or makes you stronger. We’ll see what it does to me in time.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)
