Former Bellator featherweight champion AJ McKee recently decided to re-sign with Bellator, rather than testing free agency in organizations such as the UFC, ONE, PFL, or Rizin.

His reason for staying in his homegrown promotion was simple, he fancies the one-million dollar prize for the tournament winner.

McKee recently went onto Ariel Helwani’s MMA hour, where he stated the following in regards to remaining a Bellator talent:

“There’s another million dollars at stake. There’s another million dollars (in) the 155-pound division and I’ve been kind of getting my feet wet in it a little bit. So they came with an offer that I just couldn’t refuse.

“I kind of was given the opportunity to go and talk (to other promotions) a little bit and see. So, I don’t know, once I did that and then I came back, I was like, ‘Look, there’s some people that are interested,’ and they were like, ‘You know what? We’re going to make this work,’ and we sat down; we sat down, the team and I, and figured it out.

“I think just strategically it makes sense if I say. I’m homegrown with Bellator, I’ve been raised there, my entire career has been there. So I’m not going to go anywhere unless I have to, you know what I mean? It’s no secret that (other promotions are) writing bigger checks than the UFC, so it’s like, what’s the point? For the fame? Fame don’t pay bills.

“I’m kind of a mix of both, you know what I mean? Especially when I began to fight out (my contract) and I was on my way out, and then coming full circle to where now it’s like, alright, we got that close. So it’s like any game, you’ve got to have some moves up your sleeve. But yeah, for me, I’m happy where I’m at. I’ve been intrigued with this 55-pound (155 lbs) tournament, especially being (new) in the division. So new weight class, new kingdom, new territory, and that’s what I’m looking forward to is taking over that division.”

AJ McKee won Bellator’s featherweight tournament in July of 2021, where he became the first, and to this day the only man to finish perhaps the greatest fighter in promotional history Patricio ‘Pitbull’ Freire. McKee nearly KO’d Freire with a head kick before sinking in a guillotine choke to submit the BJJ black belt in just under two minutes to claim the Bellator featherweight championship.

They’d have an immediate rematch in April of 2022, where he ultimately lost the unanimous decision, along with his belt.

Though the outcome was disputed, McKee decided to move up to the lightweight division following the first and only defeat of his career, rather than calling for a trilogy bout with the Brazilian multi-time champion.

McKee since gone 2-0 at 155 lbs, defeating the likes of UFC veteran Spike Carlyle (14-3), who was on a five-fight finish streak coming in, and then Rizin lightweight champion Roberto de Souza (14-1) at Bellator MMA vs Rizin’s New Years event, improving his record to 20-1 in the process.

It’s unknown who McKee’s first opponent in the lightweight gran prix will be, though there have been two fights scheduled thus far:

Usman Nurmagomedov (16-0) aims to defend his Bellator lightweight title against former WEC & UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson (30-11), and former Rizin lightweight champion Tofiq Musayev (20-4) will face Alexander Shabliy (22-3).

Who would you like to see AJ McKee face in the first round of Bellator’s newly announced lightweight gran prix?

The Bellator featherweight world champion AJ McKee defeated the RIZIN lightweight champion Roberto de Souza this past week at the New year’s Eve Bellator MMA vs. Rizin FF event.

The 27-year-old athlete walked out to this fight in the Saitama Super Arena wearing a 25 kg Samurai suit that he says he spent $100,000 on. In an interview with MMA Junkie’s Danny Segura about the suit of armor, McKee explained that he wanted to put on a show for the Japanese audience. He said:

“The fans [in Japan] they genuinely just love the fight game out there and the art aspect of it. And that’s why I came out in the Samurai suit. You know, just really relate to the culture. I felt like I’m the last warrior coming out. You’re not taking me alive, no survivors type.”

AJ McKee on his Samurai suit

The Bellator MMA world champion spent a ton of time researching various Samurai suits that he could get. The one he wore on the fight night was the perfect pick for him. He continued:

“There’s this place you can go about purchasing them. There’s just many suits, he’s got like different suits. It depends on like the General and who the Samurai was under and so forth, there’s levels to it … This one, in particular, it was THAT guy and when I saw it I was like I gotta get this one … This was the one.”

It was a handmade Samurai suit with alligator leather and steel plates. McKee explained how he was mentally able to spend that much, he said:

“If you’re going to do it, go full send on it, you know. I ended up finding this one, it was one-hundred grand. It took a while to pull the trigger. A lot of negotiating. I was like sh*t, I’ll do half right now, get everything else situated, want to walk out in it, put on a great show.”

A fan of the classics, AJ McKee continued:

“Imagine if Sakuraba had a Samurai suit he walked out in his first fight in Japan … It’s an iconic piece … It’s marked in the history books forever.”

It’s safe to say former Bellator featherweight champion AJ McKee enjoyed his time in Japan, where he defeated Rizin lightweight champion Roberto de Souza in the main event of the evening at Rizin FF vs Bellator New Years event.

This was McKee’s first time fighting in Japan, and just his third fight outside the United States, as he competed in Dublin, Ireland and Torino, Italy each once prior.

This victory saw Bellator talents get the clean 5-0 sweep of Rizin fighters, as they defeated two of their champions.

McKee had the following to say on his time spent in, and fighting in Japan at the post-fight press conference:

“I’m just trying to embrace it all. Being here and fighting in Japan for the fans here is a (once in a) lifetime experience. They just appreciate the art of the sport so much more here. So it’s an honor to be here and put on a great show.”

“This place is phenomenal. Fans are phenomenal, culture is phenomenal, it’s just an honor to be here, honestly. I’ve just heard so many stories and witnessed so many great fights here, so to finally be here and be a part of it…

“I had to redeem the last name McKee. The last time we were here, my father broke his orbital against Aoki. I just wanted to make sure to put on a great show for you guys.

McKee continued: “Man, that was so fun. I don’t know if that’s something I can do every fight, but it’s definitely something I enjoy a lot. I look forward to doing it again. Hopefully Rizin enjoyed the show, and they bring me back, and we can do it again for a title.”

This victory saw AJ McKee climb to 20-1 as a professional, and he’s now on a two-fight win streak with this victory.

AJ McKee, Spike Carlyle

AJ McKee put on a dominant display to defeat Spike Carlyle in the co-main event of Bellator 286.

Former Bellator featherweight champion AJ McKee marked his return to action against Spike Carlyle at The Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California. He went into the bout looking to get back on the winning column after the only loss of his career when he lost his title to Patricio Freire, who headlined the same card in April.

Carlyle came out firing from the get-go and McKee responded with as much pressure. They traded strikes early in the bout before getting into grappling exchanges. McKee got going as the contest continued with Carlyle struggling to keep up with the pace. He had Carlyle in trouble on multiple occasions but Carlyle managed to push it and survive till the end.

AJ McKee defeated Spike Carlyle after going the distance by unanimous decision.
