AJ McKee improved his undefeated record to 16-0 and advanced to the Featherweight Gran Prix semi-finals in impressive fashion last night. The 24-year-old pulled off a slick armbar submission against Derek Campos in the co-main event slot at Bellator 236, in Honolulu, Hawaii. McKee overcame the trademark toughness of Campos to earn a third-round finish. Check out video of the fight ending sequence below.

The undefeated prospect dominated the fight on the feet in the first two rounds. McKee showed off his impressive hands in both rounds, dropping Campos twice. However, Campos did enjoy some success in the fight. After scrambling to top position, he was able to land some ground and pound in the second round. Unfortunately for him that seemed to light a fire in McKee who came out even better in round three.  He chased his own takedown only to be reversed once again, however this time he threw up a triangle, before modifying into a straight armbar submission. With his fifth career submission win McKee is first Bellator Featherweight Gran Prix semi-finalist.

Despite looking so impressive McKee revealed post fight he was actually struggling with an illness pre fight. Speaking to MMA Junkie, he said.

“Before the opening morning workout, I
actually ran six miles to the mountain and back. I threw up four times on the
run, I think I had slight food poisoning. I don’t know. I knew I just needed to
get it out of my system whatever it was. It was nothing really. It’s a mindset.
I’m going to fight regardless. I’m a warrior, I’m always going to fight.”

Will AJ McKee win the Bellator Featherweight Gran-Prix?

AJ McKee & ‘Baby Slice’ Kevin Ferguson Jr. took part in an interesting strength and conditioning program. Bellator MMA’s official Twitter account shared a video of the two training in the gym earlier this week.

In this video, the two stars of the Viacom-owned promotion were trading stomach punches, which looked devastating. It’s safe to say that there wasn’t a long line of fighters in the gym waiting to take some of these nasty punches. You can check it out here:

In July 2016, Ferguson Jr. signed with Bellator MMA. He is the son of “Kimbo Slice,” who also fought for the promotion. He sadly passed away of heart failure in June of 2016.

Ferguson Jr. made his mixed martial arts debut on November 19, 2016 against Aaron Hamilton at Bellator 165 where he lost by first-round guillotine choke. He earned his first professional win against DJ Griffin by TKO at Bellator 179.

He would then rip off wins over Fred Freeman at Bellator 187 and Devon Brock at Bellator 197 by first-round guillotine choke. In his latest fight, Baby Slice faced Corey Browning on October 12, 2018 at Bellator 207 where he lost the back-and-forth fight via TKO.

On the flip side, McKee is on an impressive 14-fight winning streak. He’s fought under the Bellator MMA banner for his entire professional career. In his latest outing, he beat former two-time Bellator featherweight champion Pat Curran at Bellator 221 on May 11, 2019 by decision.

AJ McKee Jr. will take on Pat Curran at this weekend’s Bellator 221, but the “Mercenary” really wants a featherweight title fight.

McKee, 24, is one of mixed martial arts’ brightest young prospects. He has compiled an unbeaten record of 13-0 and will look to make it 14 straight this weekend in Chicago, Illinois.

While McKee may not be getting his wish to fight for the title in the Windy City, he will be fighting a former Bellator featherweight champion in Curran.

“This is the most focused I’ve ever been,” McKee told LowkickMMA. “I’m looking forward to going in there and making a statement. I always say I like to make statements.”

McKee points out that he and Curran were scheduled to meet once before in September of 2018. However, Curran was forced to pull out, and well, McKee did what he already told you he likes to do – he made a statement.

“No one had finished John Macapa when Pat pulled out, so I was like ‘I’m going to make a statement with John Macapa.’ And I went in there and knocked him out in less than a minute.”

After the Macapa fight, McKee met Daniel Crawford at Bellator 212 in Honolulu, Hawaii, all the while calling out the featherweight champion Pitbull brother.

That brings us to this weekend’s Bellator 221. McKee is fighting on the same card as Patricio Pitbull. Pitbull will look to become the promotion’s second double champ when he faces lightweight champion Michael Chandler in the main event in Chicago.

He had a pair of harsh messages for Freire in closing:

The “Mercenary’s” message for Pitbull: You’re gonna go get knocked the hell out by Chandler. Then, I want to knock his ass out before the Grand Prix as well.”

Most of the mixed martial arts (MMA) world has been understandably fixated on this week’s Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor presser. However, Bellator featherweight AJ McKee made his own impact at last night’s (Fri., September 21, 2018) Bellator 205.

Facing late replacement John Macapa in Boise, McKee came out firing on all cylinders. The top-ranked competitor scored a powerful left hand that blatantly knocked Macapa out. McKee noticed it and refused to land up any follow-up blows as a result. It was something you don’t always see in the heat of battle due to the emotions involved.

In any case, McKee secured a legit ‘Knockout of the Year’ contender only 69 seconds into the first round. Watch the vicious knockout courtesy of MMA Fighting below:

Bellator 205 preliminary card results are underway as the Viacom promotion holds this latest event on television for fight fans around the world to watch the show.

It’s once again fight day here at LowKickMMA, and the talent on display tonight (Friday, September 21, 2018) will come in the form of Bellator 205. Headlining the card are AJ McKee and John Macapa, but there’s a whole bunch of great fights also taking place on the rest of the main card.

AJ McKee and John Macapa meet in a featherweight bout in the main event. In round 1, after some good back and forth action, early, McKee landed a spinning back head kick but fell down. Once he got up, McKee landed a straight hand that put out Macapa’s lights out.

Rafael Lovato Jr. and John Salter meet in a middleweight bout in the co-main event. In round 1, they had a feeling out process early. There was no significant moments and even the announcers pointed it out. Slater briefly clinched with him up against the fence but then backed off. In round 2, Lovato landed a big strike as Salter went for a takedown and advanced with it to the point that Lovato went for a guillotine choke as he was taken down. Lovato gave up on the choke as he held him into place. Salter made some minor transitions but Lovato did a good job of not letting him pass full or half guard. In round 3, Lovato took him down late in the ring where he got full mount and then back mount as he landed some big strikes as he continued his performance in the late stages. Lovato worked him over with strikes while looking for the rear-naked choke, which he did to win the fight.

Veta Arteaga vs. Denise Kielholtz is next in a women’s flyweight bout. In round 1, they come out and clinch right away but back away. After some minor exchanges, Veta clinched up with her up against the fence. There wasn’t a lot of action as they clinched for the majority of the round. In round 2, Kielholtz clinched with her right out of the gate but once again, nothing happened and they separated again. They had a decent exchange up against the fence until Veta decided to go for a takedown and got it in the middle of the round to full guard. Kielholtz was able to get back to her feet. Kielholtz scored a takedown but Veta got back to her feet and went for a guillotine choke and Kielholtz tapped out.

Opening the main card on the Paramount Network is Patricky Freire vs. Roger Huerta in a lightweight bout. In round 1, Freire was staying back and looking to counter strike early on. Freire caught him with some good combos as Huerta was trying to find his range with kicks. Huerta blocked a big head kick and they had some nice exchanges in the pocket to the point that Freire was taking big leaps to get out of the way. Huerta had a small cut on his nose. Huerta was backing down and coming forward while bleeding heavily from his nose. Huerta stunned him with a nice combo but Huerta stayed upright. Freire scored a late-round takedown. In round 2, Freire stunned him right out of the gate but Huerta went for a takedown and got it briefly before kicking him off. Freire fired back with a big right hand that dropped him and finished the fight.
