UFC Fight Night 92 emanated tonight (August 6, 2016) from the Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah. Featherweight headliners Yair Rodriguez and Alex Caceres did not disappoint.

The two Tae Kwon Do practitioners threw all the spinning and flying attacks we have come to expect from them. In the end, Rodriguez continued to prove too elusive to hit consistently. He seemed to tire in the third and fourth rounds before reemerging in the fifth, but Caceres was too beat up by that point to capitalize. Though the decision was preposterously of the split variety, Rodriguez came away with an impressive victory in an entertaining scrap.

In the co-feature, fellow 145-pounders Dennis Bermudez and Rony “Jason” Bazzera battled it out, and it was “The Menace” who emerged victorious. The Long Island MMA rep grounded his Brazilian counterpart and opened a huge gash on his forehead in the first. More ground and pound followed in the second. In the final round, as Bermudez fished for yet another takedown, “Jason” hit a beautiful switch to take the American’s back. He very nearly sank in a rear naked choke to author an unlikely comeback, but Bermudez escaped. He was awarded a unanimous decision for his efforts.

Check out MMA Twitter’s reaction to these two exciting fights:

The main event of UFC Fight Night 92 featured one of the hottest prospects in mixed martial arts (MMA). Featherweight up-and-comer Yair Rodriguez (9-1) took on Alex Caceres (12-9, 1 NC).

“Pantera” walked out of Salt Lake City a winner, but it wasn’t easy.

Caceres landed a leg kick to get the fight underway. A leaping punch touched the chin of Rodriguez. “Pantera” threw out a spinning elbow followed by a spinning kick. Caceres ate a head kick. Rodriguez went head hunting, but “Bruce Leeroy” avoided damage. “Pantera” landed a kick kick, but slipped. Caceres grabbed the back of Rodriguez, but “Pantera” rolled and used a leg lock to return to his feet. A right hand connected for Rodriguez and the round ended about 10 seconds later.

The second round began and Rodriguez went for a leaping kick. A spinning wheel kick from “Pantera” missed. Caceres popped Rodriguez with a left hand. A left hand landed for Rodriguez. A series of hard body kicks found the mark for “Pantera.”

The two traded kicks to begin the third stanza. Rodriguez blitzed Caceres and ended it with a knee. Caceres reversed a clinch position and kneed his opponent in the body. A side kick found the target for “Pantera.” A combination landed for “Bruce Leeroy” and he finished with a knee to the body. Caceres looked to get in a rhythm. Caceres was able to earn top control and landed some punches before the round ended.

When the score totals were read, one judge somehow gave Caceres four rounds. The two other judges awarded the fight to “Pantera.”

Yair Rodriguez vs. Alex Caceres:

Mike Drahota:

This hardly-ballyhooed main event is poised to deliver some potentially hard-hitting action while boosting either the rise of potential star Rodriguez or dark horse Caceres. “El Pantera” is the prohibitive favorite, and for good reason, as the Mexican phenom has looked simply spectacular in his first few UFC bouts. It could be argued that Caceres is his toughest test in the Octagon to date, and he should be looking to ground the explosive striking of Rodriguez.

That is by no means a guarantee to victory, but throwing strikes with Rodriguez is an almost sure path to defeat. I think “Bruce Leeroy” will have his moments as this bout turns into a close affair at points, but ultimately Rodriguez will pull away with his superior talent. Yair Rodriguez by decision.

Rory Kernaghan:

Rodriguez vs. Cacares presents an interesting pairing of styles. Both men are extremely unorthodox in their method of combat, but it’s ‘Pantera’ who I see with much more of an athletic ability. So much so, I predict a whitewash early on in the fight. This isn’t to say ‘Bruce Leroy’ isn’t a great and entertaining competitor, I just feel his interest in standing with Rodriguez will be very costly. Cut and dry, first round KO for Yair Rodriguez.

Mike Henken:

Despite possibly flying under the radar, this main event could turn out to be quite an intriguing fight. Caceres, the more experienced of the two, has won back-to-back fights after dropping three straight. His experience aside, however, I just don’t see “Bruce Leroy” getting the job done here. Rodriguez will likely hold the striking advantage, and should look to keep the fight at a distance where he can implement his electrifying kicks. I’m going to go with “El Pantera” by third round TKO.
