The UFC might be heading towards another clash of two world champions as the middleweight king ‘Poatan’ Alex Pereira wants a battle against Jamahal Hill.

At UFC 283, ‘Sweet Dreams’ Jamahal Hill was able to capture the UFC light heavyweight world championship with a dominant five-round decision against the MMA veteran Glover Teixeira. Brazil’s Teixeira is a former UFC titleholder in addition to being a training partner for the middleweight champion Alex Pereira.

In 2022, Ji?í Procházka vacated the UFC light heavyweight title, due to injury, leaving the division in flux. In an Instagram video, Hill called out Procházka. In the comment section of that post, ‘Poatan’ Alex Pereira said:

“I heard prochazka is injured. What about knocking me out ?

Jamahal Hill vs Alex Pereira?

Jamahal Hill outlines that he does want a match against the former champ Ji?í Procházka. However, Procházka’s shoulder injury may need more time to recover and the US-born Hill is not looking to sit on his throne remaining inactive. During the UFC 283 post-fight press conference, he explained:

“It’s not a secret, I’ve been calling for Jiri [Procházka] for years. I’ve been wanting Ji?í for years,” Hill said. “Even kind of listening to Glover [Teixeira] talk this week and he references back to Ji?í. I want that fight … It depends on how long. He said he could be back as early as six months [in the] Summer. I’ll wait for that or next man up. It’s next man up.”

On facing the middleweight champion, Hill spoke in an interview with Middleasy and said:

“They tell me he (Alex Pereira) might come up [to light heavyweight]. Come on in my boy. Whenever he decides. Oh yeah, I can go up there and fck him up. Come on in my boy, all that smoke. I was there [at UFC 281] – I watched [the fight] live. All respect to Izzy (Israel Adesanya), but I’ll knock Pereira the fck out.” [Transcribed by MMA Mania]

Khalil Rountree can now breathe a sigh of relief, having recently received a reduced penalty for self-reporting his use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).

“The War Horse” withdrew from his scheduled bout against Jamahal Hill in the co-main event of UFC 303 on June 29, after disclosing that he had tested positive for a banned substance known as Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a type of steroid hormone.

Rountree explained that he had been using a customized supplement and that the provider had mistakenly delivered a tainted product containing the prohibited substance.

However, according to a recent report by MMA journalist John Morgan, the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) announced on Thursday that Rountree’s ongoing sanction, which began on May 4, has been reduced to four and a half months.

Alongside the suspension, which wraps up on September 18, “The War Horse” has been ordered to pay prosecution fees amounting to $157. The NAC highlighted that Rountree’s proactive self-reporting played a crucial role in mitigating his penalty.

With the reduced suspension, Rountree is now cleared to participate in his eagerly awaited title bout against reigning light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, slated to headline UFC 307 on October 5 at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Rountree is coming off a third-round knockout victory over former title challenger Anthony Smith at a Fight Night event in December 2023. He is currently riding a five-fight win streak, including finishes over Chris Daukaus, Karl Roberson, and Modestas Bukauskas.

Recently minted undisputed UFC light heavyweight champion, Jamahal Hill is ready to take on all comers to his 205lbs title since winning the belt just last weekend – including middleweight champion, Alex Pereira, claiming he would knockout the Brazilian ahead of a potential matchup.

Hill, who headlined UFC 283 last weekend in Brazil, managed to clinch the vacant light heavyweight title with a unanimous decision win over the retiring former undisputed champion, Glover Teixeira on enemy soil.

Becoming the first fighter to come from Dana White’s Contender Series to win UFC gold, Hill extended his winning run to four consecutive fights with his win over Teixeira, adding to prior stoppages of Thiago Santos, Johnny Walker, and Jimmy Crute.

Jamahal Hill predicts knockout win over middleweight best, Alex Pereira

Linked with a potential fight against former undisputed champion, Jiri Prochazka in his first attempted title defense, Jamahal Hill has also been fielded as a possible next opponent for Teixeira’s teammate and compatriot, Pereira, however, claims he would knockout the middleweight phenom if they shared the Octagon.

“They tell me he (Alex Pereira) might come up [to light heavyweight],” Jamahal Hill said during a previous interview with Middleeasy. “Come on in my boy. Whenever he decides. Oh yeah, I can go up there and f*ck him up. Come on in my boy, all that smoke. I was there [at UFC 281] – I watched [the fight] live. All respect to Izzy (Israel Adesanya), but I’ll knock Pereira the f*ck out.” (Transcribed by MMA Mania)

In the immediate aftermath of his loss to Hill last weekend in his native Brazil, Teixeira touted Pereira as a future title challenger at 205lbs, before confirming his retirement from active competition with immediate effect.

“In reality, I think I’m too tough for my own good,” Glover Teixeira said through an interpreter. “Too tough for my own health. I can’t keep up anymore. I’m gonna focus my energy on Alex Pereria, on ‘Po-Atan’. He’s gonna keep his [middleweight] belt for a while and then go up to light heavyweight.”

Planning an Octagon comeback as soon as May, Pereira is expected to make the middleweight walk next, welcoming an immediate title rematch with Israel Adesanya, or a title outing opposite former champion, Robert Whittaker.

‘Poatan’ Alex Pereira is looking to get back in the octagon to defend his middleweight throne against ‘The Reaper’ Robert Whittaker. Whittaker is the former UFC middleweight champion and Brazil’s Pereira wants a piece of him in May 2023.

Alex Pereira is a heavy-handed Brazilian striker. Most recently, he captured the UFC middleweight crown against Israel Adesanya via fifth-round knockout. Prior to that was a two-division GLORY Kickboxing world champion. In both kickboxing and MMA, ‘Poatan’ is famed for his knockout power.

Robert Whittaker is a former UFC champion who has one of the most impressive resumes at middleweight. The Australian fighter has impressive wins over ‘Jacare’ Ronaldo Souza, Yoel Romero, Jared Cannonier, Marvin Vettori, and Darren Till, among others.

Alex Pereira wants Robert Whittaker next

In an interview with MMA Fighting, the Brazilian middleweight world champion explained what he wants for his first title defense. He explained:

“I see these two guys [next]. Adesanya was a dominant champion so he has the preference to be competing for the belt again, but if he doesn’t want that, it will be Whittaker. I don’t think they’ll put someone else in other than Whittaker. He already said his game doesn’t match well with Adesanya but would be a good fight with me, so I’ll be ready for both.”

But if the former champion Adesanya wants another match, ‘Poatan’ is happy to meet him. Alex Pereira continued:

“I won’t do anything to hurt Adesanya’s plans and avoid this fight. If that’s what he wants, we’ll fight. If for some reason he doesn’t want to fight me, that makes no difference to me, it’ll be Whittaker instead. And if Whittaker doesn’t want it, there are several others that do.” [Transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting]

Alex Pereira has taken to playing defense on behalf of the UFC following the announcement of his next title defense.

In the days prior to UFC 305, UFC CEO Dana White officially announced UFC 307 on Oct. 5 in Salt Lake City, with Alex Pereira defending his UFC light heavyweight championship in the main event against Khalil Rountree.

The UFC was met with backlash over the selection of Rountree as the title challenger. “The War Horse” has won five straight and has Performance of the Night bonuses in three of his last four wins. Rountree, however, is only ranked #8, coming off back-to-back finishes of Chris Daukaus and Anthony Smith.

Many were instead clamoring and believing that the next challenger would be Magomed Ankalaev, who will instead face Aleksandar Raki? at UFC 308 later that month. The Russian, ranked #2 at light heavyweight, is coming off a huge knockout of Johnny Walker from the start of 2024.

The decision to pick Rountree over Ankalaev has left many feeling that the UFC and CEO Dana White still hold a grudge against him for the UFC 282 light heavyweight title fight with Jan B?achowicz that ended in a draw. That was despite many feeling Ankalaev deserved the nod that night.

In a new YouTube video, however, Pereira claimed that while he also hoped for a fight with Ankalaev, the Dagestani does not want to fight him.

“I always wanted to fight against Ankalaev,” Pereira said via translation. “I threw that to the organization, left it very clear, but Ankalaev didn’t want to fight against me. I don’t know the reason — if it was the location, if he just didn’t want to.

“He isn’t the champion; he can’t pick anything. I think it’s the opportunity that shows up; he didn’t want it. He has his reasoning. I don’t know what it is,” Pereira continued. “Came to tell you guys, I’m not scared of anyone, and everyone knows my history.

Alex Pereira Claims Magomed Ankalaev Refused To Fight Him, Promises Striking War With Khalil Rountree

Pereira added that the way Ankalaev is acting, in his mind, could result in him not taking the fight with Raki? seriously and costing himself an eventual title shot.

“Ankalaev is talking about Ji?í (Procházka), saying he is a false fighter, that he isn’t good since he lost two times to me. Everyone knows my story, seen my fights, not just UFC but also in (GLORY) Kickboxing, what I did to my opponents. He is taking these two fights to talk bad about the guy. I think Ankalaev has to be very careful with Raki?. The way Ankalaev has been acting his last fights, no one likes it. Fight was a tie, everyone saw it.

“I think he should watch out for Raki?. He is talking a lot about me, he is going to knock me out and all that. It’s what he says, but at the time, we’ll see if that’s what it is. But I think he should watch out with this fight. (It’s a) very dangerous fight for him; maintain focus on this fight because he is getting a tough opponent.”

Pereira added that despite Rountree’s ranking, the UFC thinks it’s the best matchup stylistically and that he is confident they will put on an entertaining performance.

Pereira, furthermore, pointed out his own meteoric rise to the top of the UFC as reason people should not count Rountree out.

“I think he is a guy showing work,” Pereira said. “It is going to be a good fight for us both. We both like to strike. Not just good for us, but for who is watching. Like I said, I thought it was going to be Ankalaev, but I think the organization sees it as a guy who will give a good fight. They are doing all this for you guys, to please you guys. Same way how I wasn’t ranked. Things happen very fast; look at what you guys get whenever I fight.

“So I think they are thinking the same thing for Khalil, giving him this opportunity. Ranking doesn’t matter. What matters is the work he has been doing, giving a show. I think it will be a good fight.”

Alex Pereira critical of Khamzat Chimaev: “He’s running from his own weight class”

Let’s just say that UFC middleweight champion Alex Pereira is not the biggest fan of Khamzat Chimaev.

While Chimaev is ranked at no. 3 in the UFC’s welterweight division, he also has visions of taking over the middleweight and light-heavyweight divisions as well, and aims to become the UFC’s first ever three-division world champion by time his career is said and done.

Pereira recently went on record stating the following in regards to Chimaev, translated by InsideFighting:

“Well, he (Chimaev) mentioned a title defense. But it was right after my last fight, so I think it was kind of impossible. I called him out for a light-heavyweight title fight (at UFC 282), but I wasn’t in a position to do either. I called him out anyway just to see if he was up to it. I knew he didn’t want the fight.

“A little while ago, he talked about fighting at middleweight and also at light-heavyweight. So he’s in the lower weight class (welterweight). But in his weight class, when he’s maybe already the next title challenger, it’s kind 0f like there are no plans for him to fight.

“He doesn’t want to, because if he loses, like everyone can, if he loses in his own weight class, it ends all the noise he’s making. So he’s running from his own weight class because he’s the next title challenger.”

Following Chimaev’s callout of Pereira, Pereira then responded when Jiri Prochazka withdrew from his first title defense against Glover Teixeira at UFC 282 and offered a vacant title fight between the two of them.

It’s not like the UFC would’ve made that fight anyway, given neither have ever competed at 205 lbs in their MMA careers, and neither of them are ranked in the division.

On the contrary, it is believed Alex Pereira will make the first defense of his newly claimed title against former champion Israel Adesanya in their immediate rematch, and fourth overall fight together.

What’s next for Khamzat Chimaev though? Colby Covington, Robert Whittaker, Paulo Costa?
