Eugene Bareman, Israel Adesanya

Following the historic title bout at UFC 281 between Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira, there are questions as to what is next for the middleweight division, as well as whether Israel Adesanya will get the chance to regain the belt that he once defended six times in a row.

At Madison Square Garden in November, Alex Pereira captured the 185-pound title from longtime foe Israel Adesanya, which happened to be their third time facing off in combat sports (first in MMA). Given that Adesanya has never beaten Pereira, there are many opinions on whether or not Adesanya should get the immediate chance to get revenge in the octagon.

In a recent interview with Submission Radio, City Kickboxing and Adesanya’s longtime coach Eugene Bareman vouches for an immediate rematch with Pereira, stating:

“At the end of the day, it can only go that way right, like you get a champion that does the sort of service that he’s done for the company, defended that many times that frequently… you have to give the man the rematch. He wants that rematch, there’s no other choice. What else could you do? No other fight makes sense.”

Bareman continues on this topic, reaffirming, “In the middleweight division, I still think that’s the biggest fight.”

Bareman on rumors of Khamzat Chimaev getting the next title shot over Israel Adesanya

Bareman also addressed recent rumors that the surging Khamzat Chimaev would be Alex Pereira’s first title defense.

“Khamzat’s a rising star but he’s literally done nothing at middleweight so he hasn’t established himself. We’re talking about two guys (Adesanya and Pereira) at the top of the food chain in terms of their status in combat sports. Khamzat is a rising star, he’s a massive rising star, but he’s not in the position of these two guys. This is the biggest fight and Khamzat has to beat people at middleweight to work his way up to even fighting one of these guys.”

One of the UFC’s budding stars, Khamzat “Borz” Chimaev, has quickly built immense momentum and has been rumored to get the next opportunity at the 185 title to face Alex Pereira. There are many opinions on this idea, however, Eugene Bareman has some thoughts to offer on why it is too early for Chimaev:

“Unless the politics and business of the sport take over, that’s still the biggest fight to make… and at the end of the day it’s not Alex’s choice to make you know, it will be Alex’s choice when he makes X amount of title defenses and does well for the company and all that, then it will be Alex’s choice.”

Clearly, Bareman strongly believes that a fourth match in the story of Adesanya-Pereira looms on the horizon, and thinks that the result will be different when they meet again in the octagon:

“We don’t have to extensively re-invent the wheel in my opinion, we have to just tweak a few things and we can turn that fight around…I just don’t anticipate we need to do a hell of a lot; I’ll just have to change a couple tactics…”

A fourth match between the two rivals will be one of the most anticipated events in combat sports if Adesanya were to be granted the immediate rematch. Do you think Israel should be given the rematch straight away, or should a fresh face like Chimaev be given the opportunity?

Pereira shocked the world when he knocked out ‘The Last Stylebender’ in the fifth round of their November 12th main event at Madison Square Garden, capturing the UFC middleweight championship in the process. With just minutes left in the contest, Pereira pressed the panic button and delivered a barrage of strikes on Adesanya, rocking the former world champion in the process. With Adesanya unable to escape the danger or return fire, Marc Goddard stepped in and called for the stoppage.

‘Stylebender’ immediately protested the call, believing he was still actively defending and in no real danger. Fans were seemingly split on the call with some calling it premature while others felt Marc Goddard did the right thing by saving Adesanya from having his lights inevitably turned off.

Marc Goddard Would Make the Same Decision ’11 Times Out of 10′

Appearing at the World MMA Awards, Marc Goddard briefly spoke with MMA Junkie who asked the highly respected referee about his decision in retrospect.

“I feel very good,” Goddard stated. “Israel, I think he’s a great guy. I think he was a fantastic champion. I’m not just saying it because I’m here. I like the guy a lot. I like all the fighters. That’s my job, I’m down the line, and if I done that fight again, 11 times out of 10 I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m very comfortable with my actions, and the people who know me will know I’m my harshest critic.

“It’s a very fine line. We don’t get second takes, reverse angles, etc. People find it weird when we say we’re there to protect the fighters when they knock hell’s bells out of each other for 25 minutes. … At the end of the day, my job is to act instinctually and correctly to protect the guys. It was an amazing fight. Congratulations to Alex, all the respect in the world to Izzy. I’m happy with what I did.”

Heading into the final round, Israel Adesanya was up 39-37 on all three scorecards.

‘The Gorilla’ returns to action on Saturday night as the UFC once again invades T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for UFC 282, the promotion’s final pay-per-view event of 2022. Dropping four of his last five bouts, Till will look to get back into the win column against budding middleweight contender, Dricus Du Plessis.

Ahead of his return to the Octagon, Darren Till spoke with MMA Junkie to discuss the potential rematch between newly crowned UFC middleweight champion Alex Pereira and former titleholder Israel Adesanya. Pereira shocked the world at UFC 281, knocking out Adesanya in the fifth round of their highly-entertaining main event. The victory earned Pereira his first piece of UFC gold and a third consecutive win over ‘The Last Stylebender’ with the first two coming under the GLORY Kickboxing banner.

“I’ve watched all three fights and the two fights he (Adesanya) was just absolutely winning comfortably,” said Till. “Alex all three times just seems to from somewhere, I don’t know what it is whether he’s got Izzy’s number or what, gets the win and it’s quite terrifying for Izzy because can Izzy beat him? We’ve seen he can – well he can’t because in the fifth Alex got it back.”

Darren Till Does Not See a Different Outcome in Potential Rematch

While Darren Till believes a fourth fight is certainly warranted between the two, he simply doesn’t see Israel Adesanya walking out as the victor after failing to do so on three separate occasions.

“Is a fourth fight worth it? Yeah, you have to because Izzy was the champ for a long time and he was dominant, but Alex has beat him three times and it’s not like a wrestler vs. a striker. They’re both strikers. It’s very tough. I know I’ve lost a fight here and there but if you lose four fights to the same person… I think the fourth fight is warranted but at this point do I see Izzy beating Pereira? For some reason, because Pereira’s won the three fights, no I don’t.”

Both Alex Pereira and Israel Adesanya have shared their desire to compete in an immediate rematch. When and where that takes place is yet to be determined, but barring any unforeseen circumstances, it looks as though that will be the next UFC middleweight title fight.
